    The Riga Interzonal was held in September & October 1979.It was an eighteen-player round robin,with the top two players qualifying for the Candidates matches.The winner was Tal with 14/17 (+11 =6 -0),the runner-up was Polugaevsky with 11.5.Just missing out with 11 were Adorjan and Ribli.The round fifteen game between Bouaziz and Gruenfeld was not played,Gruenfeld had a default victory.

There was a three-way tie for first place;Huebner,Petrosian and Portisch all with 11.5,just missing out with 11 was Timman.There is one game missing from the database-Torre v Smejkal from round 9 which was drawn after 13 moves of a closed Ruy Lopez,Flohr system (C92).

    The Rubinstein Memorial 2000 was a ten-player round robin,cat.17 tournament.It was played in Poland in August 2000,and the lineup included two Polish players(Krasenkow and Markowski). It was won by Gelfand with 6.5/9 (+4 =5),with Shirov and Van wely joint-second with 6. There is one game missing from the database, the round two game Ivanchuk-Fedorov,the opening was a Sicilian Dragon,and white won in 39 moves.

    The second match between the USSR and the Rest of the World was played in London in June 1984. It was a ten-board Match,played over four rounds.The first two rounds were drawn 5-5,but the USSR won each of the last two rounds by 5.5-4.5.So the overall result was a win for the USSR by 21-19. There are two games missing from the database,these are the two games between Beliavsky and Seirawan,Beliavsky won both of these games.

    Wolfgang Unzicker was the best player from West Germany after the second World war until the emergence of Robert Huebner in the 1970s. He never reached the Candidates tournament, but recorded victories against some of the strongest players in the world including Smyslov,Fischer,Botvinnik,Tal,Keres,Korchnoi, Gligoric and Larsen.
