  7. Capablanca - NYSCA championship 1910
The annual championship of the New York State Chess Association.

    J. R. Capablanca, C. Jaffe, F. D. Rosebault, A. H. Bierwirth, E. Ziegler, L. B. Meyer, A. F. Kreymborg, T. C. McIlwaine, Halpern, Vyrmold, J. Bernstein, H Helms, A. J. Souweine, G. H. Koehler, O. Roething, Miller, J. M. Hanham, G. J. Beihoff, F. J. Marshall, H. Rosenfeld

    After 4 rounds:

    =1-2: Capablanca, Jaffe 4.0
    =3-5: Kreymborg, Marshall, Rosenfeld 3.0
    =6-8: Meyer, Souweine, Ziegler 2.0

Play-off, agreed to decide champion, set as first to two wins, won by Capablanca 2-0.

    Round 1 game, Rosebault 0 - 1 Capablanca (40 moves) is missing. (New York Herald, 23.02.1910, p.11)

  8. Capablanca - Paris 1938

<They have established beyond reasonable doubt that the gifted Cuban played exactly 571 serious games in all, and of these have traced 560 in their entirety, one in two differing versions and two lacking a few moves each. Eight remain which are going to take a terrible lot of finding.

Three of these last took place in a little tournament at Paris in 1938 which Capablanca himself took energetic part in promoting; two were probably of little value, being against Anglares, who finished an ignominious bottom. Anglares himself, when asked for the scores, is reported, very sadly, to be no longer in a fit state to attend to correspondence at all. This tournament, though a report and a game or two from it are to be found in each of perhaps fifty different chess magazines all over the world, is yet almost a lacuna in chess history; the searchers have been able to date almost every other Capablanca game — except those played here.

Moreover, though it was a double-round tournament, the contestants may not have met each other in the second half, in the same order as in the first. This is such a strange occurrence in my experience that I doubt the correctness of one date (given by Hannak of Vienna, who is usually accurate) from which the above inference is drawn.>

Miguel Sanchez dates the tournament to January, and his dating of the third round to January 7th supports the notion that the entire event took place that month.

  14. Capablanca's escapes
The following list contains those Capablanca games of the CG database which satisfy the following conditions:

    1. Capablanca has not lost, though he was at some point down at least two pawns according to Stockfish (depth 16), and

    2. the description does not contain the word 'consultation', 'simul' or 'casual'.

    643 games fulfill these conditions.

The worst Stockfish evaluation and the first moves of the line of the correspoinding position are given.

Games preceeded by a * are contained in Görschen's book as almost losses.

    The list:

  20. Curt - Smith (1908)
This match, of five games up, pitted Smith, then Brooklyn CC champion, against previous holder, Curt. The schedule called for three games a week, with the time control 15 moves per hour.

Match summary is given in the 1908 <American Chess Bulletin>, p.190:

    https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt...

Game 8 played on July 22nd, won by Smith to retake match lead. <Curt adopted the Steinitz defence to the Ruy Lopez and fared well enough until he advanced his isolated Queen's rook's pawn and then made matters worse by exchanging queens on the nineteenth move. Thereafter Smith had little difficulty in winning with a knight against a bishop.> <BDE, 1908.07.23>

Game 10 was played on July 27th, Curt winning with Black in a Sicilian Defence. <BDE>, 1908.07.28

Games 11 and 12 were played on July 29th, both drawn. See <BDE> of July 30th.

Game 13: <Unlike the eleventh and twelfth games of the chess match between Magnus Smith and Charles Curt at the rooms of the Brooklyn Chess Club, the thirteenth, begun on Friday and finished on Saturday, had its vicissitudes, but was drawn in the end after fifty-four moves in the queen's pawn opening. Curt had the win of a clear piece, and practically the game, at his disposal, but by transposing his twenty-first and twenty-second moves he spoiled the continuation.> (BDE, 1908.08.03)

Game 14: <It required two sessions, on Monday and yesterday, to complete the fourteenth game of the match between Magnus Smith and Charles Curt at the rooms of the Brooklyn Chess Club. The encounter, the most stubborn of the series, lasted 93 moves, after which the players agreed to a draw. The opening was a Sicilian defence adopted by Curt and the protracted struggle was due to Smith's exchanging his Queen for two rooks on the twenty-fifth move, following the advance of the black Queen's pawn and an exchange of minor pieces. Thereafter Smith had somewhat the advantage and expected to be able to score the final point to decide the match in his favor. Curt, however, managed the difficult positions with skill and made his Queen do all the offensive and defensive work the situation called for. Smith won a pawn on the fifty-fourth move, but was obliged to give one in return to avoid perpetual check. The white king was returned to the king's side of the board and Smith tried hard to force through his passed QBP. In this he was foiled.> (BDE, 1908.08.05)

Game 15 played on August 9th, won by Curt with white pieces, tying match at 4-4 with 7 draws. BDE, August 10th. The BDE of August 13th reported the players had agreed to call of the match as a tie, rather than decide it on the odd game.
