  Chessical: MacDonell loses to a Q sacrifice after <42...Re4?> either through assuming Blackburne would have to move his Q to safety, or by not seeing how his K could survive being chased across the board after <42... Rd8>

The continuation <42... Rd8> has relatively few branches and allows MacDonell to play on into a probably drawn Q and pawns ending: <43. Rxd4> Qxd4 44. Qe7 Kg8 45. Qxb7 Rd7 46. Qc8 Kf7 47. Rc1 Kf6 48. Rxc4 Qd1 49. Kh2 Qh5 50. Kg3 Qg5 51. Kh3 Qxh6 52. Rh4 Qg7 53. Qc6 and the Black K is driven down the board <53...Ke5> 54. f4 Kd4 55. Kh2 Rc7 56. Qd6 Kc3 57. Rh3 Kb2 and yet the K survives, it is very difficult for White to capitalise on his extra pawn <58. b5> Rc3 59. Qb4 Kc2 60. Rxc3 Qxc3 61. Qa4 Qb3 62. Qxa7 Qxb5 63. Qxh7 Qc4 64. Qh4 Qd4 =
