Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-24-07  paladin at large: An absorbing battle, full of complexities. Among key points are Chigorin's winning a pawn with 17.....Nxh2 and Maróczy's interesting attempt at counterplay with 39. exd5.

29.b5 Qd8 30.Bc3 g6 31.Nd2 b6 32.Bb2 Nf6 33.Rc1 Be8 34.Qa3 Qe7, transposing back to the www.chessgames.com game score at this point.

After 30.Bc3 g6, Santasiere gives this note: <Black's KB looks like a perfect lemon, but with a long experience (in my youth) with the Stonewall I always hope for better days. Now (getting old) I believe I'm more of a pessimist, especially with Tchigorin dead, and Petrosian alive!>

May-10-08  Resignation Trap: After the move 38.e4? in the same book, Santasiere wrote: <He loses patience with his dead KR, and sacrifices not a pawn but a piece - it is true that we chessmasters go temporarily (or permanently) crazy - and why not? A way to escape the tortures of chess is insanity; I could mention a dozen names in real life. But I prefer the suffering (here) while being just a bit very crazy. G.K. Chesterton said: <The logician tries to put heaven in his head, and the head bursts.> Nice going, G.K.C.!>
