Domdaniel: The move order here is the one given in most sources. But in the English edition of My System there are two errors: the game is misattributed in the index as Cohn-Nimzowitsch Munich 1906 (actually an Old Indian with 1.d4) and there is a transposition in move order.

Nimzo has 8.Bg5 h6, following the same sequence as here, but only playing 13.Nb3 Bb6 afterwards.

<16.h4> was perhaps one of the most futile attacking gestures ever. White apparently wanted to start a mating attack on the h-file, and he succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Here's the position five moves later:

Oops! There is nothing to be done about ...Rh8.

offramp: Cohn may have thought, "I just played P-QR4 and he played P-QR4. So if I play P-KR4...."

If you look at the two diagrams given by <Phoney Benoni>, look at how the two sides have changed. Black has made huge progress. White's h-pawn has disappeared and he has manoeuvred his knight on b3 artfully to c3. Almost no change. Cohn not on form.

Feb-17-18  JimNorCal: Move 10 drops a pawn, so I guess the futile 16. h4 is White lashing out.

At the final move, the tournament book echoes PB: "Gegen die Drohung Ta8-h8 ist nichts zu machen."

  kingscrusher: Very interesting game.

13.Bd3 is a major mistake it seems. White should indeed have enough compensation for the pawn if played correctly.

plang: 6..0-0 was new; 6..h6, 6..Nc6, 6..Qe7 and 6..Bb4 had been played previously. I would have thought that 10 Bxf6 was forced - was this really played as a gambit? White really thought he had time to use 3 moves to reposition his knight from b3 to c3?

I am surprised that this was chosen as a game of the day.
