Mar-26-04  markt: didn't understand. what happens if 45.KxR?

Benzol: Taking the Rook would allow the Black Queen to infiltrate for a perpetual check. I presume White was trying to avoid a draw.
Mar-28-04  markt: I see no possibility of perpetual check after 45.KxR Qh4+ 46.Kg2 (Re1+ mate pending).

  Benzol: <markt> <Re1+ mate pending> I think you mean Re8 mate pending.
<I see no possibility of perpetual check> If we continue 45.Kxh2 Qh4+; 46.Kg2 Qh3+; 47.Kf2 Qf3+; 48.Kg1 Qg3+ etc it's difficult to see how White can avoid a perpetual check on his King.
Mar-29-04  markt: You're right, Benzol. I forgot I had flipped the board. :))

Benzol: <markt> No problem mate. Given what happened subsequently I'll bet Steiner wished he had played 45.♔xh2. :)
