Dec-17-09 | | SirChrislov: "DEN HE GIVES ME TEH OTHER POINTY DOOD"= double bishop sac. |
Dec-17-09
 | | Domdaniel: Why, why, why, didn't I trust Bauer? He's won one prize for me already, and lightning isn't supposed to strike twice. I even had a book open at this game, but went off to try Nimzo-Tarrasch first. |
Dec-17-09
 | | Domdaniel: <sleepyirv> Definitely genius, and you're not so sleepy. I reasoned that Nimzo was a more likely victim for a rewriting of his style. Duh. |
Dec-17-09 | | SirChrislov: <domdaniel> Nimzo-Tarrasch was the other game I was thinking of, when I thought checking the original first but, too late. the easiest clue by far. |
May-24-10 | | TheChessVids: This just about inspires me to play the Bird's Opening! |
Oct-16-10 | | redorc19: <WhiteRook48> True, Bd3 does block the pawn. However, after seeing the rest of the game, especially move 38, the move should not really pop out as erroneous. |
Nov-11-10
 | | kingscrusher: I have video annotated this game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsRn...
It has a wonderful double bishop sacrifice in it :) |
Dec-31-10 | | Llawdogg: Thanks kingscrusher. Nice job. Excellent presentation. |
May-13-11 | | Grandpa jo: Andrew Soltis has annotated well this Lasker-Bauer game in his "why Lasker matters" book. |
Jun-08-11 | | parisattack: This game encouraged me to play the Bird as a beginner and it served me well. It also encouraged me to make quite a few unsound Bishop sacrifices until Fine's Middle Game book helped sort it out for me. Wonderful game, bet Lasker had fun. |
Jun-20-11 | | IRONCASTLEVINAY: Bauer!??? I dont understand why he didnt resign earlier. But finally with giving up the queen lasker made him realise that his position is hopeless. |
Jul-29-11 | | Yodaman: Too funny not to post here...
Clue #34 of the 2009 Holiday Puzzle Hunt:
"SO HE SEZ O HAI AND PLAYZ A RILLY WEIRD MOVE AND I GO LIKE LOLZ UR DOIN IT WRONG AND L8R HE PLZ TEH NITE 2 NOM MAI NITE AND I DUN LIKE DAT SO I NOM IT FERST! |
Jul-29-11 | | solskytz: I liked the final move - Q takes on d3 - it's like Lasker tells his worthy opponent - "OK - you stop here!" Or - "I'll have no more of your ridiculously playing own, destroying the magic of my landmark combination". Well put!
I like it all the better because it's a passive sacrifice - like a road sign, calmly staring at you... |
Aug-12-11 | | DrMAL: 38.Qxd3 was indeed a most fun move, let's retire our dear matriarch she has many a protege waiting for her throne. |
Aug-18-11 | | solskytz: well put - also to you |
Aug-18-11 | | Kolyas: Well, after 38...Rxd3 39. cxd3, White has ONLY a five Pawn advantage. Hardly enough to win with, doncha think? Seems like Black MIGHT have some drawing chances. After all, little Manny was hardly out of short pants. Might not have known how to play the endgame very well. |
Aug-18-11 | | Kolyas: Maybe I better dust off the old computer and check this endgame out. Bauer is going to kick himself silly when I show him the drawing line. Wonder whatever became of this Lasker chap anyway? Anyone ever heard about him? Probably dropped out of chess after high school. |
Sep-05-11
 | | Phony Benoni: The game is important enough to be GOTD twice, and the pun relates nicely to the US holiday of Labor Day. By the way, I've compiled a little collection of Double Bishop Sacrifices, though I haven't updated it lately. Game Collection: Double Bishop Sacrifice |
Sep-05-11
 | | FSR: What a bozo, playing on in that ending. |
Sep-05-11 | | Oceanlake: Bauer was no slouch, and he may have thought that Lasker was nobody in particular. I wonder if Lasker sensed his move 23 as he played his move 9. Bauer should have moved his king away from the Rook before resigning next move...and treated Lasker to the beverage of his choice. |
Sep-05-11 | | Gilmoy: <Phony Benoni:> You must rename it to "Game Collection: TEH OTHER POINTY DOOD"!! |
Sep-05-11 | | hedgeh0g: What's the finish? |
Sep-05-11
 | | HeMateMe: The old double Bishop sac opens another kingside. |
Sep-05-11 | | Needle: <hedgeh0g>, advantage of five pawns in this situation is a no-brainer. Bauer got properly spanked. |
Sep-05-11 | | swr: Isn't this an old GOTD that used to be called "Emanuel's Labor"? |
