  Honza Cervenka: What about 9. Nc3 Nd4 10. Qd3 Nxe4 11. Nxe4 Rxe4+ 12. Kd1 d5 13. Qg3? For example, after 13...Bg4+ 14. f3 Qxg3 15. hxg3 Nxf3 16. Bd2 white should win the game.
Apr-25-03  ChessPraxis: Black also has an alternate mate in two by reversing the last two moves: 14. ... Ng3+ 15. Kg1 Rxf1#
Apr-27-03  crafty: 9. ♘c3 ♘xe4 10. ♘xe4 ♕xe4+ 11. ♕xe4 ♖xe4+ 12. ♗e3   (eval 5.03; depth 11 ply; 750M nodes)
Oct-25-04  Uchechi: Brilliant finish!!!
Nov-22-04  InspiredByMorphy: 9.Nc3 Nxe4 10.Nxe4 Rxe4+ looks better than craftys 10. ...Qxe4+ Now Be3 cant be played 11.Be3 Rxe3 . 11.Be2 Nd4 . Beautiful game by Bird. Perhaps the best Ive seen by him.
Nov-24-04  InspiredByMorphy: Or 9.Nc3 Nxe4 10.Nxe4 Rxe4+ 11.Kd2 Rd4+ also gives black the advantage.
Nov-24-04  ramdaz: One of the rare wins for NN. Good work old boy :)
Nov-24-04  InspiredByMorphy: <ramdaz> Bird won this game. Someone complimenting NN is admirable though. Not all the NN's lost.
Dec-25-04  Knight13: Pretty Mate. 13. Qxf7 was a bad move, but he was threating Qg8+!. I don't think NN saw the move 13... Ne2+! coming.
Jan-25-05  InspiredByMorphy: Does 7.Be3 give black complications?
Jan-25-05  Morphystyle: I think in the 9 Nc3 line given by inspiredbymorphy, Honza is correct, white stands better with 11. Kd1 and Qg3 instead of 11.Kd2. I think black's best chances lie with 8..Nd4 9.Qd3 Nxe4 with Re8 coming. What do you think?
Jan-25-05  InspiredByMorphy: <Morphystyle> <I think black's best chances lie with 8..Nd4> 8. ...Nd4 is great. However I think ...Re8 is too slow. Check this variation out. I think its good for black. 8. ... Nd4 9. Qd3 Nxe4 10.g3 Qf6 11.Bf4 Nxf2
Jan-25-05  InspiredByMorphy: After reviewing this game more Ive concluded that whites best defense is 9.g3 and if 9. ...Rxe4+ 10.Be3 Nd4 11.gxh4 Nxf3+ 12.Kd1 and blacks attack runs out of steam. Even 9. ...Qxe4+ 10.Qxe4 Nxe4 11.Be3 Nxf2 12.Kxf2 Bxe3+ 13.Kg2 still leaves black shorthanded, being down a rook as whites rooks are about to enter the game.

  tpstar: <IBM> I considered taking up 4 ... Qh4!? versus the Scotch but found it too risky for my tastes, so I prefer 4 ... Bc5. After 9. g3 Rxe4+ 10. Be3 Nd4! 11. gxh4 Nxf3+ 12. Kd1 note 12 ... Bxe3 13. fxe3 Ng4 wins material, since 14. Ke2? Rxe3+ 15. Kd1 Nf2+ 16. Kc1 Re1# with a picturesque mate! I'm sure 4 ... Qh4!? is playable but look sharp the whole game. And White can always choose the safe 5. Nc3 instead.
Jan-27-05  InspiredByMorphy: <tpstar> Thanks for the input. I agree 4. ...Qh4 is risky but I like it. Also 5.Nc3 I think is better than 5.Nb5 .
Mar-25-07  Atking: <Honza Cervenka: What about 9. Nc3 Nd4 10. Qd3 Nxe4 11. Nxe4 Rxe4+ 12. Kd1 d5 13. Qg3? For example, after 13...Bg4+ 14. f3 Qxg3 15. hxg3 Nxf3 16. Bd2 white should win the game.> Right I think this is an analysis of GM Gutman He suggests also 12. ...d6!? with 13.Bd2! as better for White as now his King can escape in c1. Therefore with 6. ...Nd4! Black must equalize quite easily 7.Nxc7+ Kd8 8.Qf4 (Staunton) Nxc2+ 9.Kd1 QxQf4 10.BxQf4 NxRa1 11.NxRa8 d6! 12.Nc3 Ne7 13.Kd2 Be6 14.Bb5 Nc6 15.RxNa1 Kd7 was draw few moves later Leisenbein vs Gutman corr 1999.
Jul-13-07  benba57: I've run around posting similar comments on other Scotch games where black wins, but it seems that opening the f-file is a great aid to black. Any thoughts??
Oct-29-07  Aspirador: <it seems that opening the f-file is a great aid to black>The game was long over when the f-file was opened with 13.Qxf7. I don't know what you mean.
Oct-29-07  Confuse: looking at the analysis, it looks like white had a won game : 0 perhaps the pressure of playing against mr bird caused him to fluster : P
Oct-29-07  pawnofdeath: 5.Nb5? That was white's blunder, with the check 7.Nxc7+
Oct-29-07  psmith: <InspiredbyMorphy>
After 8. ... Nd4 9. Qd3 Nxe4 10.g3 Qf6 11.Bf4 Nxf2 12. Kxf2 Nxc2+ 13. Ke2 Nxa1 14. Nc3 how does White continue. Analysis aided by Fritz 5.32 seems to indicate White's attack peters out.
Oct-29-07  psmith: <tpstar> in your line, 9. g3 Rxe4+ 10. Be3 Nd4! 11. gxh4 Nxf3+ 12. Kd1 note 12 ... Bxe3 13. fxe3 Ng4, White doesn't have to play 14. Ke2? -- instead he can play 14. Nd2 (attacking the Rook), which leads to a plus for White. (Fritz 5.32)
Oct-29-07  kevin86: A brilliant finish! Maybe cg.com can use it as a puzzle down the road.

Note the double pin of pieces at f1 and f2-and then the pin at h2.

benveniste: Hi! My name is Mike and I'm a wood pusher. While everyone here is discussing 9. ♘c3, I've been looking at 10. ♗xe4 instead of 0-0, and I can't see a winning line for Black line after that. Can someone point out my blind spot?
