Pawn and Two: <offramp> In this game, played at Simpson's Chess Divan, Zukertort was assisted by L. Hoffer, and Blackburne by R. Steel. They alternated colors in the following game, Blackburne / Allies vs Zukertort / Hoffer, 1881

Not all the good moves in these games were made on the board. Keeping people like Hoffer and Steel happy was also a good move.

Leopold Hoffer (1842-1913) was a chess journalist and administrator for many decades. He was the editor of "The Field" from 1882 to 1913, and his own magazine, "The Chess Monthly", ran from 1879 to 1896. He was a personal friend of Zukertort's, and eventually he became a bitter enemy of Steinitz.

Robert Steel was a patron of chess. Living in Calcutta, he helped raise a considerable amount of the necessary funds for the 1883 London tournament. The tournament book referred to Mr. Steel as, <"an ardent supporter of the cause">.

In 1889, Steinitz dedicated his book, "The Modern Chess Instructor", to Steel, stating, <To the generous patron of chess and chess masters, the honorable R. Steel>.
