Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-13-19  Retireborn: Fine outplays his opponent in the opening, who castles not wisely but too well, but it takes him a surprisingly long time to activate his bishops.

In Woodger's book the game is annotated by Santasiere, who calls 45.Qb4 "a good thrust", but it is in fact a blunder, as White can't win after the reply 45...exf2.

Incidentally Woodger claims the Stahlberg match was played in Stockholm; possibly confusion has arisen because Fine played a couple of short matches in Gothenburg immediately afterwards.

Oct-13-19  spingo: <Retireborn: ...In Woodger's book the game is annotated by Santasiere, who calls 45.Qb4 "a good thrust">

Is it possible that the phrase "a good thrust" has somehow slipped from the previous move, 44...e3? That <is> a good thrust.

Oct-13-19  Retireborn: <spingo> I don't think so; the full quote is "A good thrust, having an eye to defence and attack - after which Black must acknowledge the inevitable."

Of course Woodger may have mistakenly paraphrased him. One would have to check ACB 1937, 5 for the original notes.

Oct-13-19  Granny O Doul: It's a pretty weird move to call a "thrust", however bad or good. You could just as well call it a "sortie" or a "perambulation".
Oct-18-19  spingo: <Granny O Doul: It's a pretty weird move to call a "thrust", however bad or good. You could just as well call it a "sortie" or a "perambulation".>

LOL. You are totally right. I have only ever seen "thrust" used for pawn moves.

Oct-20-21  billand88: <RetireBorn ...White can't win after the reply 45...exf2.>

I think he can win. Start with 46.Qe7+. If either 46. Kg8 or 46.Kh6, Qg5+ forces an exchange where White looks very good. 46.Kh8 appears worse after 47.Qf8+, forcing the Queen exchange, else 48.Bd3+.

Oct-22-21  Retireborn: <bill> Thanks, but I think you may have overlooked that after 46.Qe7+ Kg8 47.Qg5+ Qxg5 48.fxg5, Black has the winning blow 48...Rc1+!
Oct-23-21  billand88: > Black has the winning blow 48...Rc1+!
< Yep, that looks like it busts my idea, never saw that (thanks!).
