Gabriel Velasco: <White did not retreat the attacked rook, but played the surprising sacrifice 17.Rad1!? It is very hard to say if the sacrifice is absolutely correct or not: If Black takes the rook, then the e-file is opened in White’s favor; yet nothing definite can be proved with specific variations.>

He goes on: <Many people praised Ivanchuk’s original move in this game: it looked like a product of inspiration over the board. Nevertheless 23 years before that game, the Russian GM Isaak Boleslavsky had played exactly the same exchange sacrifice against GM Roman Dzindzichashvili, in Russia (1967).>
