Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-14-09  Dredge Rivers: The deciding game is a Candidates Match, and no kibitzing? Interesting. Especially since it involves Portisch winning, and that didn't happen too often! :)
Mar-14-09  blacksburg: jeez, i do NOT understand Larsen, his play is always so strange. i mean, what was he thinking in this game?
Mar-21-09  Dredge Rivers: <17. ... Nd7?>

It loses the exchange, at it's all downhill from there. So, what the heck?

Aug-24-11  r00ksac: 24...Ne5 'almost' holds but is quickly 'busted' by Rxe5 and quick mate on the seventh with queen and rook. Could have been an oversight.
Oct-22-15  Howard: Probably the reason never got kibitzed on until 2009 was simply that it wasn't much of a "game"---Larsen blundered, and it was all over.

Granted, it was the deciding game, but then Larsen was already down by two points with only three games left to go (and Portisch was going to be White in two of those games), so the match was pretty much decided by that point.

Oct-22-15  Howard: Not sure, by the way, why Dredge Rivers would have said that Portisch didn't win "too often". Didn't I read somewhere once that he was one of the top ten players in the world for several years ?
Oct-22-15  Everett: He didn't win <Candidates Matches> that often.

Of course he did lots of winning to get there in the first place, much more than most!

beatgiant: Is <17...Nd7> really the blunder? How else to avoid losing a piece to the threatened Bxf6? Maybe the real blunder was <15...c5>.
Oct-23-15  Howard: If I recall correctly, Pal Benko said in CL&R that 15...c5 was indeed the losing mistake because it cost the exchange. Black's game rapidly slid downhill from there.
