  Benzol: <chessgames.com> Spassky's 100 Best Games has Black's 29th move as Qe6 not Qf6. 29...Qe6 makes more sense.

The reason I was looking at this game is that Spassky himself considered it to be the best game he ever played.

Apr-05-04  ughaibu: Amusing game, and Qf6 looks wrong for sure.
Apr-05-04  Benjamin Lau: Benzol, when did he make this comment? Which year? Just curious.

Benzol: Spassky was asked the question in Belgrade just after the USSR versus the ROW match in 1970.

"It is hard to single out only one of your games. The game that is dearest to me is the one I played 10 years ago with the Leningrad player Reshko. But taste changes with time...".

Apr-05-04  ughaibu: I think it's likely that a player'll have the strongest feelings about earlier games, from the period when passion was fresh. Also Lasker's choice was his game with Pillsbury 1895, Capablanca the game with Bernstein 1914, Botvinnik the Capablanca game 1938, are there other examples?
Apr-05-04  Benjamin Lau: Benzol, thanks for the reply. I wonder how Spassky thinks is his best game, now that 34 years have elapsed. That must be a lot of time for reflection. Maybe I'll go visit the guy one day, it would be an interesting trip. Good night to you and ughaibu.

  Benzol: Sleep well mon ami.
May-16-06  aragorn69: And Spassky appears to still cherish this incredible ("à la Tal") game : http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
May-16-06  jackmandoo: When you first start to play through the game its like, "Boris what the heck are you doing?" Then you see and your like "OOOOOHHHHhhhhhhh nice."
Nov-04-10  melianis: This is a gem.
Nov-04-10  goldenbear: This is my favorite game of all time.

NM JRousselle: This was a nice game by Spassky, but Black defended poorly. 16 ... Ra2 must be a weak move. When I 1st played this game thru, I thought 16 ... Rc1 followed by c3 must be a better course.
Nov-05-10  goldenbear: 16.Rxc1 17.Rxc1 c3? I don't think so. I think that allows Nd6+ with the idea Bxd6 Qxg7 Rf8 exd6 Bh5. I see other ideas as well. In truth, there is probably no need to hurry with the Nd6+ idea. Without a LSB, Black's pawns are not that fast. White's lead in development will win.
Oct-04-11  Eduardo Bermudez: For Spassky himself, his best chessgame !!
Jul-06-13  Xeroxx: holy smokes
Jul-06-13  andrewjsacks: Enterprising and very strong play by the future World Champion.
Jun-03-15  ToTheDeath: Spassky sacs a rook "on spec"

Remarkable combo.

Aug-23-16  tigreton: Incredible game! It's almost imposible to see this kind of play nowadays, a pity... 7. Qg3 and 10. b4 great imaginative moves! And Black a willing victim, capturing everything. The kind of show chess lacks today...
Aug-15-19  Kay Sadeeya: Can someone please analyse the end? I am having trouble seeing how black is lost. I mean I know white is better, but I can't figure out where the curtain will fall. Thank you in advance.
Aug-15-19  Granny O Doul: At the end, Black will be mated after ...Kc6 31. Nd5+, while if instead 30...Ka6 or ...Ka5, 31. Qxh8! with mate on a8 if Black captures the White knight, so he must remain two pieces down with no counterattack or perpetual in sight and White's attack still raging.
Aug-15-19  diceman: <Kay Sadeeya:

Can someone please analyse the end?>

1) mated-in-10 (23 ply)

30...Ka5 31.Qxh8 b4 32.Qd8+ Kb5 33.Nd5 b3 34.Nc7+ Kb4 35.Nxe6 b5 36.Qe7+ Ka5 37.Bc5 Rxg2+ 38.Kxg2 b4 39.dxc4 Ka4 40.Qa7#

Aug-15-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: It's fortunate that Black doesn't have a Zwischenzug threatening mate at g2. That allows White to keep the initiative and collect yet more material than he previously had sacrificed.
Aug-15-19  saturn2: I saw 24. e7

24...Bxe7 25. Qxg4+ Kd8 26. Bxe7+ Qxe7 27. Nxe7 Kxe7 28. Re1+ here I stopped but guessed there should be a skewer on the unprotected rook h8

24...Qxd5 25. Qxg4+ Kc7 26. e8=Q

Aug-15-19  stacase: So how far ahead do you have to go move for move to claim that you solved it?

Instead of 30.Bxd4+ I would have played 30.Qxh8.

Aug-15-19  tigreton: This is one of those games that make you love this art.
