Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-15-07  euripides: Spassky at this time seems to have been interested in reviving Capablanca's idea of c4 and queen's side play in this sort of structure. A similar but less successful example:

Miles vs Spassky, 1978

Aug-15-07  Ziggurat: <euripides> Yes, I was going to remark that this is one of fairly few examples where I've seen the c4 idea work, but you got there first. Usually white manages to force e4 in the end. Here, he didn't and after 21 f4 the dynamic potential of the d4-e3-f3 pawn complex was lost.
Aug-15-07  euripides: <zig> I agree I would look at e4-e5 here. Sometimes White plays with a knight on e5 and a g4-g5 thrust, as in the Miles game I linked to and I think also some Pillsbury games.

Spassky targets d4 to restrain e4, suggesting he had learned from Karpov vs Spassky, 1974 (see <acirce>'s post).

I suppose with 21.f4 Gligoric is hoping eventually to organise g4, but it never looks very promising. By the end the rook on g5 is owed an apology.
