Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-13-16  zydeco: 18.Bxh6 introduces wild complications - for awhile, white has a rook and three pawns in exchange for two minor pieces.

It must have been a surprise to Spassky when his rook gets trapped on the wide-open b-file after 27....Bc8! In retrospect, 29.Ra2 was essential.

Jul-13-16  Howard: Looks like Zydeco is going through at least several games from the Montpellier event from 1985. I still remember that tournament.

Seemed a bit strange that a score of +3 was good enough for a three-way tie for first place---normally, it would take a higher score to take first place. But there was probably a lot of "jockeying" as far as making it into the top four.

woldsmandriffield: A frustrating game for Spassky and in the context of the final tournament standings a costly loss.

29 Ra2? would not have been an improvement because the reply 29..Bb4 exploits the a5-e1 diagonal. The error looks to be 32 Re2? as instead 32 Kg2 stops Nf3-d4.

Timman was lucky to get away with 17..Bh3? allowing 18 Bxh6! but there doesn’t seem to be a KO blow in the forced line that follows.

Feb-05-19  wtpy: 23 With Re5 white would have kept plus because keeps the knight out of g5. Interesting game.

woldsmandriffield: @wtyp its the black diagonals again. For sure, Spassky would have liked to play 23 Rxe5 for the reason you give but 23..Bg7 (xe5, xc3) must have dissuaded him. White would have to go 24 Rh5 and after 24..Be6 25 Ne4 b6 its hard to assess the position.
Mar-05-19  edubueno: Creo que 23 Txb7?! no fue una buena jugada. Permitió que las negras organizaran su juego. Era más fácil mantener la ventaja con 23 Txe5!, por ejemplo 23...Ag7; 24 Th5 Ae6; 25 Ce4 b6 y entonces: 26.Rh4 f5 27.Nd2 Bf6 28.Rh5 Kg7 29.f4 Kg6 30.Rh3 Nf8 31.Nf3 Bd7 32.a5 bxa5 33.d4 Be6 34.Ra1 Bxc4 35.Rxa5 Be2 36.Ne5+ Bxe5 37.Rxe5 Bd1 38.Ra5 Bxc2 39.Ra6 Bd3 40.Rxc6+ Kf7 con ventaja de las blancas.
