Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-24-11  Shams: <22.Qf8> The Queen returns home for a brief and mysterious colloquy with the King. Can anyone tell me what the heck they're talking about? I don't understand this move at all.

This line with 2...b5!? is sharp and looks like a good way to unbalance. It is named the Spassky Variation although he does not appear to have ever won with it. Karpov, Tal and Smyslov all fared better, and if those three all played it the move must be correct.

I Bilek vs Tal, 1967
Doda vs Smyslov, 1966
Saidy vs Karpov, 1972

The pawn on b5 usually provokes some early stabbing from White, as in the game here. One plan for White is 3.c3 dissuading 4.a4 b4, pushing past, but it turns out Black can play it anyway:

samvega: I believe the answer to your question is that, with 22.Qe3, white was threatening 23.Nxf5 Qxe3 24.Nxe3, where in the ensuing exchanges white comes out a pawn ahead one way or another. (And white can play 23.Nxf5 against any other queen move by black).
