Kibitzer's Corner
May-06-20  Cheapo by the Dozen: ... Re1+ pins one rook to the other. So ... Qxd7+ will recover a rook (up to two-rooks-vs.-queen), and Black's connected passed pawns will be decisive.
May-06-20  drollere: 31. .. Re1+ 32. Kf2 allows a R vs. R ending with black two pawns up.
May-06-20  agb2002: Black has two pawns for a rook.

White threatens Qxc6.

The rook on d1 is tied to the defense of the queen. Therefore, 31... Re1+:

A) 32.Kf2 Qxd7

A.1) 33.Rxd7 Rxc1 - + [2p].

A.2) 33.Kxe1 Qe6+, followed by b4, looks winning.

A.3) 33.Rxe1 Qc6 as in A.2 (34.Rb1 b4 35.Rxb4 Qc5+).

B) 32.Rxe1 Qxd7 as above.

May-06-20  Brenin: The position a move earlier, with the rook sac 30 ... Rxd7 Black's best line, might have made a more challenging Wednesday problem. After 31 ... Re1+ White would have had a better (but still losing) endgame with 32 Kf2 Qxd7 33 Rxd7 Rxc1 34 Rb7; he's two pawns down, but at least his rook is as well placed as possible, on the 7th rank and behind the passed pawns, whereas the line played is hopeless.
May-06-20  saturn2: Saw black can remain with two connected plus pawns, either Q vs 2 R or R vs R
May-06-20  stacase: 31... Re1+ looks to be the most productive. Over the board I might have tried that rather than give up. One of those little sayings when you post says, "Nobody ever won by resigning." But I didn't see a clear path to the win.
May-06-20  TheaN: Okay I'm going to be honest here: winning queen for rook is Monday level <31....Re1+ 32.Kf2 (Rxe1 Qxd7) Qxd7>... finishing the game <everything that follows> seems a bit ridiculous for a puzzle. It's obvious Black's winning with two passers and queen vs rooks but are we supposed to see all that? Weird choice here.
May-06-20  saturn2: I know the player Zinn from Boleslavskis's book on the Sicilian. Zinn is mentioned there for lines in the f4 Sicilian.
May-06-20  goodevans: <TheaN> I think the moves you posted are sufficient as a solution. We can't be expected to see the rest as white's moves are unforced and some are suboptimal. And yes, that makes it too easy for midweek.

As <Brenin> says, starting the puzzle a move earlier might have made a more challenging Wednesday problem. Black to play, 30...?

Another good opportunity missed (it feels like that's happened a few times lately) and another sadly unsatisfying puzzle.

May-06-20  WorstPlayerEver: Lutza Zinn
May-06-20  JohnBoy: The local engine likes 16...de4, but I wonder about 16...b4. Can white show that black's Q-side pawns are hanging and a liability, or does black cramp white's style on the Q-side? I can't find any similar games.

gawain: I liked this puzzle. Black looks like he is going down a rook; he needs a clever combination to save the game. There is only one move that saves the game for black, but it sure delivers!
May-06-20  mel gibson: White can't take the Rook -
the King must move to f2.
