Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-05-16  fispok: What wonderful vishy. A classic underpinning of white's defences. Anand is an animal in the closed sicilian.

plang: 8 Bb3?! is rarely played and suspect; 8 Qe1 is the main line. After 9 Qe1?!..a5! Black was already at least equal; 9 Nxd4 would have been better. 15..b4 would have been a better way of following up the exchange sacrifice. After Anand's 15..Qa5? White missed the opportunity to play 17 axb..cxb 18 Qf2..bxc 19 Qxd4..Nh5 20 e5..dxe 21 Qxc3..Qb6+ 22 Kh1..exf 23 Qc4 and Black would not have had enough for the exchange. Still, Black queenside play was a bit slow and White was able to build a dangerous kingside initiative. 34..Nc2? was imprudent; 34..Nc6 with the idea of ..Ne5 would have been more solid. White missed the strong 36 Bf4!..Bxf4 37 Qh5..Rd6 38 Rbg1..Kf7 39 Rxf4+..Kc8 40 Qh8+..Kd7 41 e5..Rd3 42 Rf8..Kc6 43 a4! with a winning attack. In time pressure White lost his advantage after 38 Qf2?; with 38 Qa5..Rc8 39 Kg2! with the idea of Rh7+ White would have maintained a nearly winning position. 43 Ra8? was a tactical oversight losing quickly; Nunn thought that 43 e5..Kc7 44 Rh4..Rb5 was White's best chance to draw in a messy position though Black would have maintained a big advantage. 44..Kc6! was the only good move but it was winning.
