May-25-06  paladin at large: With 26. Qc3 Menchik sets up a pin of knight or rook - Interesting how Capablanca does not let this impede his kingside attack. Capa never moves his king out of the line of the pin. With 39. Qxf2 (forced), Menchik gives it up with an already lost position.
May-25-06  THE pawn: the clash of world champions.
May-25-06  CapablancaFan: Was Menchik the first unofficial women's world champion?
May-25-06  THE pawn: She was the first official, no?
May-25-06  CapablancaFan: <THE pawn: She was the first official, no?> Apparently, you are correct, I just read her bio and it does confirm she was the women's world champ for some period of time.

Gypsy: It took a V2 bomb to terminate Menchik's hold on women's championship. Till today only one woman clearly eclipsed Menchik's accomplishments -- Judit Polgar. (Zuza P. achieved higher max ratings then Menchik, but did not climb as high in world rankings.)
Apr-30-14  Howard: Back in the 80's, Chess Life ran some type of world championship trivia quiz one time, and one of the questions was "What world champion was killed in a German bombing raid in World War II ?"

Naturally, a lot of people would be surprised to read of such a thing happening. Haven't "all" the world chess champions of the past died by natural causes ?!

But the question had a catch to it, which should be rather obvious if you know who Menchik was.

Apr-30-14  Petrosianic: <Haven't "all" the world chess champions of the past died by natural causes ?!>

There are still theories and speculations about Alekhine.

Apr-30-14  RedShield: <What world champion was killed in a German bombing raid in World War II ?>

The term <raid> should be confined to an attack by aircraft. Menchik was killed by rocket attack.

Apr-30-14  Petrosianic: Was it a V-1 or a V-2?
Apr-30-14  RedShield: Ask me what time it is.
Apr-30-14  Petrosianic: What time is it?
Apr-30-14  RedShield: You can't afford a watch?
Apr-30-14  Petrosianic: How will a watch tell me if she had a V-1 or a V-2? It would have been better if she'd just had a V-8.
Jun-22-16  RookFile: White showed some ambition in this game. I have to think 15. dxe5 gives reasonable drawing chances.
