Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-22-06  Rory O Rion: 15: Kt-e5 is more commanding, don't you think?
Apr-22-06  Calli: <don't you think?> No, because of 15...Bc7. After 16.Nxf7 Bxd6 17.Nxd8+ Kf8 18.Nf7 Bb4+ 19.Kf1 h6 20.Bf4 d5 Black is better.

if 16 Bxf7+ Kf8 17 Qc5 Bxe5 wins the bishop on f7

tamar: <Rory O Rion> thanks for the comment. Without it, I wouldn't have seen that Morphy's 15 Rc1 anticipates 15...Bc7 but now he has 16 Bxf7+ Kxf7 17 Rxc7 keeping the bind and Black can never develop his queenside.

tamar: The amateur does not play at all badly. I think Morphy missed 20...f5! and would have had to play hard to save the game if his opponent had found 27...Be8 guarding against the Knight check.

Apr-22-06  Calli: In fact, doesn't 27...Bc4 force Morphy to take an immediate draw? 28.Qe4 Bxa2 should win for Black, so 28.Nf7+ 28...Kg8 29.Nh6+ Kh8 (not Kf8?? Qf5+) 30.Nf7+ etc
Oct-07-20  paulmorphy1969: name of opponent is
Fredrick Lokes Slous

[Max Lange gives Morphy's opponent as "S --- s". He has been identified as Fredrick Lokes Slous

MissScarlett: Is there a contemporary source for the game apart from Lange?

jnpope: In <Paul Morphy>, 2ed, Lange, Leipzig 1881, p118 and p314, Lange originally gives Morphy's opponent as Bird on page 118, but then corrects this in his errata given on page 314 with Morphy's opponent being "S...s". Lange's version ends 31.Qc1 "u. Weiss gewinnt" (and White wins). So anyone searching for an earlier version may want to check to see if it was published as Morphy-Bird and then also corrected in Lange's source.

<Paul Morphy>, Maroczy, Leipzig 1909, p156, gives the opponent as being "Amateur" and extends the game with 31...Qf5 32.Be3 Qxf7 33.Qb1+. Where did this extension come from?

<Morphy's Games of Chess>, Sergeant, 1916 London, p270, gives "Amateur", the same extended moves as Maroczy, and mentions that Lange had given the opponent as "S...s" to which Sergeant writes <One is tempted to identify him with F. L. Slous.>, but he himself doesn't actually go that far, i.e. he uses Amateur instead of Slous.

Re: <paulmorphy1969: He has been identified as Fredrick Lokes Slous>

Is this based solely on Sergeant's speculation or is there factual evidence?
