Dec-06-03  babakova: A nice but flawed endgame, on 44.gxf5 Kotov wrote ...e3 would follow but this isnt completely sound: 44.gxf5! e3 45.f6! exd2 46.Bf4+ Kc6 (46...Ne5 47.Bxe5 Bxe5 48.f4) 47.Rxb5 Bxf4 48.Rf5... or : 45...Ne5 46.f7! Rb2(46...exd2 47.Bf4! Kc4 48.Rxe5!) 47.Bxe3!! dxe3 48.Rxe5+!!Bxe5 (48..Kxe5 49.Nc4+ Kf4 50.Nxb2 Kxf3 51.Nd3) 49.f8Q Rxd2+ 50.Kc1 Bb2+ 51.Kb1... And black has no win

offramp: In the above variation 48.f4 should probably be 48.f7.

plang: The system with 3 Bb5+ was relatively new at the time this game was played. 4..a6 spending a tempo and leading to doubled c-pawns is not played much today. A year earlier in Moscow Botvinnik had played 8..Nf6 against Sokolosky and had gone on to win; 8..Be7 was new. This might not have had significance but for Black's cecision to play 11..f6?! and 12..g6?. White had a large advantage after the queens came off but started to go wrong with 26 Nxb5?; 26 Ra1 would have been better. After a second error with 28 f3? Black was better; 28 Rxb5 at once would have been stronger.
Apr-04-22  cehertan: I would not call it a flawed ending on the basis of white having one seven move deep labyrinthine variation that could have held by a thread. Nor does that make blacks play unsound.
