Mar-19-04  shr0pshire: This is very impressive play by the young Carlsen. This was a tough draw by both sides, and it shows in my opinion that both sides came to win.

Carlsen is still rated almost 400 elo points lower than Kasparov! Incredible!

marcusantoinerome: Did Carlsen miss a win by not playing 51.Kh3 Bf1 52.Rc1 The threat of 52...♖xg2+ is gone, and 52...♗xg2+ 53.♔g3 doesn't help 52...Be2.

Or do the Bishops of opposite colors offset White's outside passed pawn?

Mar-19-04  lassuli: The preliminary FIDE rating of Carlsen, published today, is 2552. So it's a bit below 300 difference at the moment. But even so!
Mar-19-04  ruylopez900: <marcusantoinerome> Carlsen didn't miss a win like that because of several reasons. One is that Carlsen can't force the promotion of the pawn since either the Bishop stays in front of it or it moves away when threatened (ie 51.♖a7 ♗b5) and the pawn can't advance for fear of capture by ...♖xa6. Another is that on the Kingside the pawns are completely symmetrical and, again, Carlsen can't force a win. Good job by the youngster to be a pawn up though.
Mar-19-04  MoonlitKnight: If the complaint from the Norwegian chess organization had been heard, he would have been 2575 instead of 2552 I think, but he was 2279 a year ago, so I guess he can't be too worried about that.
Mar-24-04  refutor: boo kasparov! i can't believe he declined the botvinnik system by not playing 5. ... dxc4 for a more heroic treatment of this opening please go here Ponomariov vs Shirov, 2003
Mar-24-04  ruylopez900: It would have been interesting if Kasparov played the KID, especially since Carlsen tried to school Kasparov in it during the second game.
Mar-24-04  BiLL RobeRTiE: 5...h6 would have made me happy too. Where is Garry's Semi-Slav spirit?!
Mar-24-04  steven18: Why did Carlsen play the KID when it's known the Garry is a full fledged expert on the opening?
Mar-25-04  refutor: <where is garry's semi-slav spirit> i'm not sure...he's even been playing 4. ...a6 Topalov vs Kasparov, 2004 he did allow the meran v. short though Kasparov vs Short, 2004
Mar-25-04  ruylopez900: <steven18> The whole discussion can be found at this game Kasparov vs M Carlsen, 2004. Hope that helps.
Mar-25-04  karlzen: Carlsen missed the amazing: 29.Bc7! Bd7 30.Nb8!! Bxa4 31.Rfe1 Bxd1 32.Rxe6 fxe6 33.Qc6 Raxb8 34.Bxb8 Rxb8 35.Qxe6+ Kh8 36.Qxf5 a4 (36...Rxb2?? 37.Qc8+ Kh7 38.Qc1) and white wins by advancing his kingside pawns accompanies by the king. In the end black will not be able to avoid losing a piece or being mated.

Kasparov defended very well but he played the opening (as quite often these days) in rubbish manner.

<marcusantoinerome>, 51.Kh3 Bf1 52.Rc1 Bxg2+ 53.Kg3 f5! with the idea of Kh5 and f5-f4+.

Apr-22-04  acirce: <If the complaint from the Norwegian chess organization had been heard, he would have been 2575 instead of 2552 I think> What was that complaint about?
Apr-22-04  MoonlitKnight: They were complaining that his rating was calculated wrong for some reason. I don't know the specifics.
Jun-18-04  boordgamer: <Karlzen>This is true but remember this is a rapid match and combos or plans like this are hard to find and for this reason neither player can really be scolded for their mistakes in this game. On Carlsen though, he is a true chess prodigy and my prediction is tomorrow he will take poor Aronian to school.
Aug-06-04  ArturoRivera: how old was M Carlsen in this game?
Aug-06-04  acirce: <ArturoRivera> 13. He will be 14 in November.
Aug-06-04  ArturoRivera: 13 years old?!! the guy is a genious, cant believe he draw against Kasparov, i bet he would be a very strong contender for the world championships. By the way, for his age and his performance, hasnt he been compared to Young Fischer?
Aug-06-04  acirce: Nothing is for sure but I think it's a very realistic thought that he may become WC and even the world's best player, I see nothing that points at his development being halted. My first prediction is that he will reach 2700 and when he does he will be the youngest player who has done that. As for Fischer it is a natural comparison even though it is hard to compare players from different eras like that.

tamar: The big question for Magnus is when to play the supertournaments. You know the organizers are going to want him. Playing the top guys too soon seems to have had a negative impact on Radjabov though, as the young guy is either crushed or does fairly well by going into survival mode (going for draws from the get go) that over time undermines his own confidence.

In the 80's Nigel Short jumped into the big tournaments after early promise and got crushed so badly that it took years before he was a decent challenger again. I think Carlsen may be different though. He, or his coach, have so far mixed tough venues with easier ones.

Aug-07-04  alexandrovm: This was a nice draw
Aug-07-04  ArturoRivera: <tamar> Thats a very good argument his coach must be awared, how old must Carlsen to start playing higher level chess?, but in my opinion if he continue with this performance he will at least have a shot at the title, but it is almost shure that he will become on of the strongest players of his era.
Aug-07-04  alexandrovm: He has the right age, he surly has future. And this was a blitz game!
Aug-07-04  acirce: Rapid, technically. The seeding to the Reykjavik Rapid was done by a blitz tournament where Magnus ended up second from the bottom and Kasparov second from the top (Aronian won) so that they met in the first round. Kasparov won the second game and Magnus was knocked out despite this draw. He said he played like a child in that game :)
Aug-09-04  alexandrovm: Who said that, Kasparov or Magnus :-)
Anyway, at the end, Kasparov won the final against Short (winning with black in a lost position!), I could link to that game, but I don't know how to do it. The time was 20+5, or 25 +10, don't remember.
