Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-04-24  mel gibson: I chose 23. Bxe7

Stockfish 17 agrees with the text ply:

23. Ncd5

(23. Ncd5 (1.Ncd5 Bxh4 2.Qxh4 exd5 3.Nxd5 Bg4 4.Nxc7 Bxd1 5.hxg7 h5 6.Rxd1 Nxg7 7.Nd5 Rf8 8.Nf6+ Rxf6 9.Qxf6 Re8 10.Qxd6 Re6 11.Qd5 Kh7 12.b3 Kh6 13.e5 Kg5 14.Qd8+ Kg6 ) +9.81/41 256)

score for White +9.81 depth 41.

if I force SF to choose my ply it's not as strong:

23. Bxe7

(23. Bxe7 bxc3 (1. ... bxc3 2.b3 Bc6 3.Bxd8 Qxd8 4.Nxe6 Qe7 5.Nxg7 Qe5 6.Nf5+ Qxg3 7.Nxg3 Kf7 8.Rd3 Ke6 9.Rxc3 Rb6 10.Re1 Nf6 11.Kc1 Ra6 12.a4 Nd7 13.Nf5 Ke5 14.Rc4 Nc5 ) -6.43/43 299)

score for Black -6.43 depth 43.

Oct-04-24  TheaN: Lately it's happening more often that the logical move is just as valid: after 23.Bxe7 bxc3 24.b3 +- I'm not exactly seeing how Black is going to prevent disaster and SF agrees.

Also here, as Wednesday, there's better though: <23.Ncd5!> keeping the b-file closed is a good idea also <23....exd5 24.Nxd5 Bxh4> it doesn't really matter whether Black takes on h4 on move 23 or 24. I chose <25.Rxh4> here:

It felt more logical to keep the queen on the g-file. In hindsight, battery on the h-file works also, slightly better even. Both work though, Qxh4 due to the text and Rxh4 due to <25....Qc5 26.Nf6+ Kf7 27.Nxe8 +-> not necessarily the strongest line, but direct: take out the defender of g7 and either take with the queen or pawn.

Not really Friday material (more wed/thu) due to the alternative line and the relative ease of Ncd5 with clear compensation.

Oct-04-24  vajeer: <TheaN> I thought the same and selected Rxh5 too. It's not much behind Qxh5. I guess we can claim full credit ;-)
Oct-04-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king's line is: 23. Ncd5 Bxh4 24. Qxh4 exd5 25. Nxd5 Qb7. (maybe, some moves can have different order, but reach the same position here). Then, 26. hxg7 Bf5 27. Ne7+ Kxg7 28. Nxf5+ Kg8 29. Qg5+ Ng7 30. Rxh7 Kxh7 31. Ne7 (Now, B must give the ♕ to avoid the mate). Otherwise, 31... Qxe4?? or Qb5?? then 32. Rh1+ Nh5 33. Rxh5#. Game over.
Oct-04-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: <TheaN> & others... After 25. Qxh4 Qc5 26. hxg7, another try to survive with: h5? can be answered by: 27. Qxh5 Nxg7 28. Ne7+ Kf8 29. Ng6+ Kf7 30. Ne5+ (Kg8 or f8 or e7; 31.Qe7# or 30... Kf4 33. Rh4+ Ke3 34. Qg3+ Ke2 35. Qe1#). The last chance is 30...Ke6 31. Qf7+ Kxe5 32. Qxg7+ (Ke6 33. Rh6# or Ke3 34. Qg3+ Ke2 35. Qe1#) 32...Kf5 34. Rf1+ Ke6 35. Qf7+ Ke5 36. Re1+ Qe3 37. Rxe3# .

In the case of <25. Rxh4 Qc5 26. hxg7> h5?? would lose immediately: 27. Ne7+ Kf7 28. g8=Q+ Kxe7 29. Q3g6 and mate near. Or 29. Rf4 Rdc8 30. Qh4+ ... and mate following. I mean, depending on B answers Rxh4 seems more deadly.

Oct-05-24  Rosbach: These were the moves I found after looking at the puzzle several times during the day: 23. Ncd5 exd5 24. Nxd5 Bxh4 25. Qxh4 Qc5 26. hxg7 I didn't see 26... Bf5 but it only seems to delay the defeat.
