plang: Played in the 5th round of Dortmund 2000 (a ten player round robin). Adams and Anand were tied for the lead at +2 entering the round; Anand ended up tying for 1st with Kramnik at +3 wjile Adams ended up tied for 3rd with Leko and Akopian at +1. 18 a4 had been introduced in Anand-Adams Dos Hermanas 1999. In that game Anand had played 20 Nf3 and the game had ended in a draw; 20 Ne4 was new. After 25..Qf5?! 26 Rac1! Black was worse; Anand recommended 25..Re5 26 Qh3..c4 27 Ba2..Ra8! 28 Qd7..Bf8 with Black having compensation for the material. Perhaps 27..Qxd5 would have been better though he probably would not have had enough play for the pawn. Adams blundered with 28..Qf3? after which he was lost; better was 28..Be4 29 Bxe4..Rxe4 30 Qg5..Qe6 31 Qh5! (not 31 Rcd1..Re5 and White has to give up the exchange because if 32 Qh4?..Be7 traps the queen) with a healthy extra pawn which should eventually win.
