Chessical: MacDonnell had been recently successful with this defensive system, winning with as K-side attack in V Green vs G MacDonnell, 1862

<6. b3 Nc6 7. g3 Re8 9. Bg2 c6 10. a4 a5 11. h3 has been tried by Grischuk.

MacDonnell exchanges his white squared Bishop, but for little good. <8...Nc6> 9.0-0 Qb6 followed by Re8 seems better.

As played, Philidor defence produces a position in MacDonnell fails to generate any counter-play, and he is quickly overwhelmed by Mackenzie's King-side pawn storm. The game is very much one-way traffic.

If <35... Ra7> 36. Bd5 Rc7 37. gxf6+ Nxf6 38. Rxf6 Bxf6 39. Rxf6 Kh6 40. Qg5+ Kh7 41. h5 Rg8 42. hxg6+ Rxg6 43. Qh5+ Kg7 44. Rf7+ Kg8 45. Qxg6 mate.

The otherwise ingenious <42... Ng4+> fails to 43. Qxg4 Bh4+ 44. Ke2 Rxg6 45. Bg8+ Kxg8 46. Qxg6+ Rg7 47. Qxg7 mate

<44. Qh3!> wins outright as Black cannot protect <h7> due to the pin.
