Chessical: Mackenzie equalises against MacDonnell's slow opening, but is then careless with <17...f6?> which allows MacDonnell to play <d5> which both wins a pawn and dislocates Black's Queen-side. Mackenzie then has no good place for his King having already played <g5>, but he compounds this problem by opening the <h> file.

MacDonnell misses <28. Qa6> picking up the <d6> pawn with a winning advantage, but he still retains a significant advantage in space as well as the pawn.

By move 30 Mackenzie does not have any good continuation.

<30...Ne7> is met by the exchange sacrifice <31.Rc6> which and if <31... Nxc6> 32. dxc6 Qc7 33.Rxd6 Rd8 34. Rxf6 with an overwhelming position. This idea would be equally valid after Mackenzie's actual move in the game

Mackenzie's unhealthy belief in counter-play along the <h> file culminates in <32... Qh7?> is an empty threat which simply gets the Queen into fatal trouble.
