Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-24-06  ToTheDeath: Gheorghiu's one and only win against Larsen, after 8 previous defeats. Must have been sweet.
Sep-24-06  Prugno: I have a cute story related to this game.

When I played Gheorghiu in 1999 (that game is in the Chessbase MegaDB, although not here in Chessgames) I unknowingly repeated this line with Black and, of course, ended up losing after an interesting struggle.

After the game, I suggested to my esteemed opponent (who was extremely nice to me, by the way) that 10... 0-0 and then ... d6 would have been more solid than 10... d5, as I played, and he answered in perfect Italian "Probably. I beat Larsen in that line, however." When you lose, it helps to know that at least you are in good company!

Sep-24-06  ToTheDeath: Nice story Prugno. I guess when you lose to someone that often, you tend to remember the win very easily. (See my comments to their 1970 Seigen game).
Feb-25-12  wordfunph: game sidelight..

<Larsen complained during the tournament that the hotel staff persistently ignored his 'Do Not Disturb' sign and woke him too early. Certainly sleepiness could account for his play after the first adjournment (42.Ke2 as sealed move) in this game. After 40 moves, black had a clear, if not winning advantage. The next session saw Larsen forcing the white king into safety, shepherding a passed pawn home.>

Jan-28-16  Howard: Yes, I remember that comment from the tournament book, about Larsen's complaint.
