May-24-05  Whitehat1963: Capablanca making it look so easy as usual in the Ruy Lopez.
Mar-21-12  HeadlessHessian: On 23, instead of Kxf7 how about Qh4?

Phony Benoni: You never know about P-KR3. It can be a useful precautionary move, or a waste of time. It can shoo away a pesky piece, or -- as with <22...h6> here:

it can produce a fatal weakness of the kingside.

It must be admitted that Chajes didn't have much choice, and he may not have been too worried abput Combination Part One. After all, he was attacking a loose piece on e3. But then Combination 2: The Sequel hits the theaters.

I like the farsighted <32.Kf1>. Realizing the game will be over soon, Capablanca brings the king closer to home so that the pieces can be set back up with less effort. Economy was always his hallmark.

Jun-19-15  RookFile: I would have tried 20....a5 for black. It gives the f8 bishop some pressure on b4 and also ...Ra6 is a possibility for black, or ....axb4 and later Ra2. Don't know if it would have mattered, it seems like white was already better.
Jun-19-15  Honey Blend: <Phony Benoni: You never know about P-KR3.>

Quite reminds me of A Gibaud vs F Lazard, 1924, where 4. h3? gets White either a trapped Queen or mate.

But with all due fairness, 21. ... h6 could have been a prohylactic move here to stop ♘g5 however after 22. ♖fd1 things are still looking pretty bad for black.

Penguincw: Hehe, it's celebration of the Cubans this week! Today, it's JRC, yesterday it was LDP, and earlier this week, there was another Capablanca game.
Jun-19-15  kevin86: First it was the queen and bishop, then it was the rook and queen.

:-D

On one occasion, I had an opponent who played the Eight Pawns' Gambit and went into the "endgame" with king versus rook and ... well, eight pawns. (And of course he didn't want to resign.)

So I promoted my a-pawn to a rook, my b-pawn to a knight, and so forth, and then mated him on e1. As a result, when we set up the next game, my king and his queen, rooks, bishops and knights were already on their home squares.
