Jul-11-05  InspiredByMorphy: I think it is safe to say that Thompson wanted to play aggressively in this game, and did so by playing 7. ...d5 , but in an open position like this Morphy simply thrived. 8.Bb5 was a sneaky move of which Thompson probably didnt expect. The move obviously had a psychological effect as black could have responded with 8. ...dxe4 . The position would still be even but the text move won a pawn for white from which black would never recover.
Jul-05-07  frank124c: This game illustrates the basic principle that once you have a pawn advantage you exchange pieces and push the passed pawn.
Jan-02-08  JimmyVermeer: This was actually the 2nd game between Thompson and Morphy in round 1 of the American Chess Congress. According to Philip Sergeant, the exact date is October 7, 1857. The event is listed as "Casual". Is there a way to update this?
Jan-02-08  Calli: Sergeant is wrong about the date. Both the tournament book and David Lawson report that PM and Thompson played their first two games on Oct 6.
Jan-02-08  JimmyVermeer: Where can I find this tournament book online?
Jan-03-08  Calli: http://cgi.ebay.com/The-First-Ameri...

An electronic copy on Google Books is not viewable. There in no good reason for this since it is long out of copyright.

  ketchuplover: I like 23...R4e2
Oct-17-09  WhiteRook48: 23...R4e2 is not that dangerous
Dec-07-10  James Bowman: It appeared to me as if Mr Morphy resigned himsef to playing a winning endgame from the outset, methodicaly exchanging pieces towards that end. Remove Morphy and insert Capablanca and none would be the wiser?
Jul-26-14  Ke2: morphy's conversions are always so clean
Jun-12-22  paulmorphy1969: This is the second game in Maroczy Book ,in Shibut Book in Franco Zenon Book,in Sergeant book end in fist published game in book of Daniel W.Fiske The First american Chess Congress New York 1857
