Gypsy: I don't think I have ever seen Vidmar destroyed like this.

<9.Be3...> is a 'novelty' that Schlechter promptly puts out of business.

----------------

Ok, it seems that this game was from 1912 thematic QGD-Tarrasch tournament in Budapest.

All of Vidmar's games were decisive, and all decisive games were Vidmar's, except for one:

Vidmar beat Duras and Teichmann; lost to Marshall, Schlechter, and Maroczy. Duras beat Maroczy for overall even score for both. The rest of the games were drawn. (Single round round-robin tourney.)

Jan-05-14  Karpova: <Gypsy>

This is indeed from the Budapest Schlechter Variation themed tournament:

1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.g3 Nf6 7.Bg2

Another game is Duras vs Maroczy, 1912

1. Marshall 3.0
1. Schlechter 3.0
2. Duras 2.5
2. Maroczy 2.5
3. Vidmar 2.0

The play in the tournament was harshly criticised:

<Daß dieses Turnier für die Theorie wertvolle Resultate zutage gefördert hat, kann wohl niemand behaupten, denn sicherlich ist es wenig beweiskräftig, wenn ein Großmeister wie Maroczy schon im 14. Zuge die Flinte ins Korn wirft. Wollte man aber auch annehmen, daß der Nachziehende so übel daran ist, wie kommt es, daß Vidmar als Anziehender im 19. Zuge verliert. Gleichwohl wäre es unbillig, diese Veranstaltung völlig mit Stillschweigen zu übergehen.> (Paraphrasing: No one can claim that the tournament yielded important results for chess theory. It's inconclusive when a GM like Maroczy resigns after 14 moves (see game above). If you were to assume that Black was simply so bad off, why does Vidmar lose in 19 moves with White. Yet, it would be unfair to omit the event silently.)
