Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-28-08  Arbitrarily0: This is the shortest game (87 moves) in which all of the squares had been temporarily occupied. The final square to have a piece placed on it was a3. Smiltiner unknowingly broke the record with 81...Ra3.
Jan-28-08  Shams: <Arbitrarily0> how on earth did you come across this stat?
Feb-23-09  WhiteRook48: maybe he checked the game 64 times in a row observing each square, or made a chessboard diagram and marked an X on a square if a piece was placed on it?

This is not, in fact, accurate. This is the earliest occurrence (move 81) of all 64 squares having been <moved to>, that is, the initial occupation of first, second, seventh and eighth ranks does not count. (Also, at 87 moves, the shortest game where this happens.)

For instance, in Karpov vs P Nikolic, 2000 all squares have been <temporarily occupied> as early as 31...Na6. (Even this is not a record.) Of course, that game is actually longer than this, but many others are not.
