Clever ideas have a way of backfiring in bad positions. Here, White has been getting pushed around a bit, and decides to try and sneak his way back in with <25.Nc2>. Black snatched the bait with <25...Qxc3>, and White produced <26.Bb6>, apparently planning 27.Ne3 if the rook moved.

Unfortunately, <25...Nf3+!> stopped all that foolishness.

Now 26.gxf3 Rg5+ produces a quick mate, and 26.Kh1 Qe5 all but forces 27.g3, when ideas like ...Nd2 and ...Qe4+ will make life unpleasant for White, even if he snatches the consolation prize on d8.

So unpleasant, in fact, that Goldenov decided he wanted no part of it. Besides, this was the last round, and there's no place like home.

Jun-24-09  vonKrolock: < 27.Kh1 Qe5 all but forces 28.g3> Then 28...♖d2! (if ♗xd8 then ♕xg3!!) And now 29.♔g2 ♕e4 etc, or 29.♘e1 ♕xg3!! 30.♘xf3 ♕xf3+ 31.♔g1 ♖de5 32.♗e3 ♕xe3!! (the second ♕-sac!) 33.fxe3 ♖g5+ 34.♔h1 ♗e5 <analysis diagram>
