Feb-25-06  mang00neg: Owned.
Feb-25-06  Illogic: This is the kind of player Ivanchuk is. Coming off of two straight losses, where he had time trouble in both, he burns a LOT of time thinking and plays 15. Bxc4!?, a move which introduces ENORMOUS complications. At first glance it looks losing but of course 16. Qa6! is the point.

A mere ten moves later, Ivanchuk takes home the full point. Wow!

Feb-25-06  THE pawn: Ivanchuk lives alone on his planet, sometimes he absolutely trouces everyone, then he starts dreaming and forget how to play.
Feb-25-06  mang00neg: Must have been hard for him to calculate that his 15th move was safe. I'm impressed he won so easily against a player like svidler in his oppenent's pet opening!.
Feb-25-06  Mating Net: Totally agree guys. When Ivanchuk brings his A game, he literally mops up. This game is a perfect example.
Feb-25-06  Fan of Leko: Svidler's 2nd straight Grunfeld loss. Maybe time to go to the backup defense? I don't know this line but 8..Qd5 9 e4 Qa5 looks better than what black played.
Feb-25-06  SniperOnG7: Wow!! Meticulous and clean execution which looked extremely logical when replayed but obviously would require a lot of guts to play during the game.
Feb-26-06  notyetagm: Gorgeous game by Ivanchuk. Not too often that you see Svidler lose a miniature in his favorite defense (Grunfeld).
Feb-26-06  notyetagm: Is this game as outstanding as I think it is or am I just a big fan of Chucky's extraordinary chess?
Feb-26-06  pawn to QB4: Certainly 15.Bxc4 looks as outstanding as you think. I'll pay Ivanchuk the respect of assuming it's OTB. What a forest of variations you have to see. I don't, for instance, see a second best move to 20.Rxg2 so, if you can't sac the exchange and let the black queen in like that, the whole line's suspect. Any ordinary player would be doing well to spot 16...Bb7 and the saving reply 17. Qa5. Personally, I'd have failed to see that 15. Bxc4 isn't ruled out by 15...Bb4+ "winning a piece".
Feb-26-06  810609: Nice piece to ughaibu´s Game Collection: Hilarity with Ivan C. :-)
Feb-26-06  little fluffy: All of Svidler's trouble started from 8...c5. After the simple 9.Qxb7 his game was just difficult.
Feb-26-06  EmperorAtahualpa: This game is a beauty!

Can anyone who followed the game tell me roughly how much time Ivanchuk needed for his 15th move?

Feb-26-06  acirce: <EmperorAtahualpa> 45 minutes according to ICC, which is not necessarily correct but probably close.
Feb-26-06  EmperorAtahualpa: Thank you, <acirce>, that is most impressive!

By the way, good to see you back!

Feb-26-06  ahmadov: <acirce> It is really surprising that you are seen rarely lately. I think we all benefit from your impartial and clever posts in this web site. So, keep kibitzing, please.
Feb-26-06  EmperorAtahualpa: A very subtle move which I really liked: 17.Qa5!
Feb-26-06  acirce: <ahmadov> Thanks for appreciating my humble efforts. I'll be here more from now on again.
Feb-26-06  setebos: I dont think Svidler should play the Grunfeld against top players like Ivanchuk. I believe his record is dismal and besides they know what he will play and prepare accordingly.

Mateo: Brilliant win. I think the losing move was 18... Bg2?.

If 19... Bd5 20. Bf6! Rg8 (20... Nf6 21. Bb5, White wins; 20... Rc4 21. Nc4, White wins ) 21. Bd5! Qc1 22. Ke2 Qc8 23. Be6, White wins.

If 21... Qh1 22. Nf1 Qb7 23. Rc7, White wins.

If 24... Qh2 25. Re8 Kd5 26. Qa8, White wins. If 24... Be7 25. Re8, White wins. If 24... Bh2 25. REh7, White wins. If 24... Qh1 25. Ke2, it is all the same.

Feb-26-06  suenteus po 147: This was the chess I was told to expect from Ivanchuk at this tournament and it's a pleasure to finally see it! :)
Feb-26-06  Aleking: Acirce, I also have always appreciated your posts.

  chancho: Same here.
Feb-26-06  SniperOnG7: <setebos> The problem is Svidler doesnt have a solid backup defence. What is he gona play against d4 other than Grunfeld? KID? Isnt this under a superGM cloud? Don't be mistaken...I respect KID and its champions but the point im making is changing from Grunfeld to the KID is like buying a new car which is exactly the same model from the old one except for a different colour!
Feb-26-06  chessmoron: is this grunfeld: stockholm?
