Aug-04-11  Sho: Academically what is the referent of pun, i.e. what is the "gift" received by the Greeks?

Aug-04-11  whiteshark: <Sho> Greek gift sacrifice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_...

Aug-04-11  Sho: Wow...prompt service--thanks whiteshark.

Irony: between posts my wife and son (5) just came home from the aqauriam with stories, stickers, and coloring books of great white sharks. Funny.

Aug-04-11  DrMAL: Lots of beer sold in that London pub...
Aug-04-11  cunctatorg: Back in 1897 (during the first Olympiad of modern times?) the "Greek" (City of Athens)Chess Team had had to be consisted by foreign visitors, Englishmen perhaps! There wasn't back then any serious chess in Greece; none of it!
Aug-04-11  whiteshark: <Sho> Wondrously and peculiarly interwoven we are. Simply delightful, indeed. :D
Aug-04-11  goodevans: This was a correspondence game??!!!
Aug-04-11  Funicular: I'll bet the postman knew little about chess, and as he ripped the envelope open and replied himself with Bxd8 he thought "hehe, i'm winning the game by myself". He told all his friends he had replied alone and had won a queen to the greeks. Then when the reply came he did not dare deliver the letter, nor translate the greek words of laughter written below. I bet the first ":P" smiley was used. As in "Bg4! :P"

playground player: The whole city of London produced this cock-up? Yikes!
Aug-04-11  kevin86: If London had performed this bad during "the Blitz",we all would be speaking German.
Aug-04-11  The HeavenSmile: "Beware Greeks Bearing Gifts" would be better and more appropriate title
Aug-04-11  ajile: They lost because they didn't have Rybka.
Aug-04-11  crazyedmen: 6 ..:bxf2 seems already devastating..
Aug-04-11  Mkhitar: classic game for that time
Aug-04-11  felix90: I prefer 10 Nd4 ... ;)
Aug-04-11  50movesaheadofyou: Of course they won, they had Zeus.
Aug-04-11  rapidcitychess: A Legal's Mate couldn't have been done better by a judge.
Aug-09-11  50movesaheadofyou: Another mini with the same finish:

1.e4 e5
2.Nf3 Nf6
3.Nxe5 Nc6
4.Nxc6 dxc6
5.d3 Bc5
6.Bg5 Nxe4
7.Bxd8 Bxf2+
8.Ke2 Bg4#

6...Bxf2+? 7.Kxf2 Ng4+ 8.Qxg4!

May-07-15  A.T PhoneHome: Despite the very unfortunate outcome for London, one positive can be found from this game:

Not much paper or ink was wasted!

FSR: <50movesaheadofyou> It is now. And another game where Black played 6...Nxe4. Also my game where I played 6...Bxf2+ 7.Kxf2 Nxe4+. That also wins, although the engine likes 6...Nxe4 even better. But my opponent thoughtfully stumbled into mate. Opening Explorer.

  FSR: <goodevans: This was a correspondence game??!!!>

There have been much worse correspondence games. For example, I had a game in 1974 or so that went 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nh5 6.Bxe7 and my opponent resigned. (Actually, we sent our moves in descriptive notation.)

And hey, it was 1897. But I would have expected the "City of London" to do better.
