Kibitzer's Corner
May-21-06  syracrophy: After 25...Rxc8 26.Nd6+ with a piece of advantage
May-22-06  notyetagm: A good example of <REMOVE THE GUARD>:

24 ♖x♖ <DESTROYS> one defender of the d6-forking square

24 ... ♗x♖ <DEFLECTS> a second defender of the d6-forking square

25 ♖x♘! <DESTROYS> the third defender of the d6-forking square

and after 26 ♘d6+ and 27 ♘x♖ White will be up by a piece. The only question is whether or not the White knight on c8 is trapped.

May-22-06  THE pawn: It is not. I checked everything I could.
May-22-06  dehanne: The knight will escape via a7 after capturing the rook.
May-22-06  notyetagm: <dehanne: The knight will escape via a7 after capturing the rook.>

That's what I thought: either the knight escapes via a7 aided by the White e3-bishop or White can play fxe5 and make an outpost for his knight on d6.

But I would have played the combination regardless because even if the knight were trapped, it would become a <DESPERADO> that could win the a7-pawn. Then with White a,b-pawns versus a Black b-pawn, White would be able to create a passed a-pawn (a rook's pawn) with pawns on both sides of the board in a same colored bishops ending, which is almost certainly a win.
