Peligroso Patzer: If I understand correctly, this was an Armageddon tie-break game to decide the "Match of the Hopes". In the USA, the time allotments for such a game are typically 6 minutes (White) and 5 minutes (Black), with Black getting draw odds. Is it really correct, per the comment posted by <Xaurus> that FIDE uses a time allotment of 4:00/3:00 for an Armageddon game?

In any case, it is interesting that Radjabov employed the Dutch Defense in a game for which he had draw odds.

May-22-07  MrPatzer: <Xaurus: This is a blitz game. White has 4 minutes, black 3 but can draw for victory.> Which explains why Radjabov is clearly going for the draw on moves 24-27.

Considering the frequency of draws at this level of play, I think Black has the advantage in Armageddon games like this. The extra minute for White doesn't provide enough balance, it seems to me. Thoughts, anyone?

May-22-07  acirce: Where did Xaurus say anything about FIDE? 6-5 seems to be standard in FIDE events - it was planned for the FIDE Elista WC if it had been needed and will be for the Candidates Matches too.
May-22-07  Xaurus: I couldn't find the page where I read about the time controls for that specific armageddon game. But I believe it was correct.
May-22-07  Hot Logic: Is there any real need for armageddon games? Just implement Sofia rules in tie-breakers and the problem's solved!
Jun-20-07  nimzo knight: But Sofia rules dont rule out a draw.
Jun-20-07  Comandente: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... says time control was 4 and 3 minutes
