Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-21-09  newzild: I'm sure this endgame was a technical draw - R+P endings are hard to win with pawns on bishop-files.

Karpov must have been kicking himself for rejecting the perpetual on move 39.

Jul-21-09  technical draw: Sorry, <newzild>, I had nothing to do with this game.
Sep-20-10  Pygeum Lycopene: probably smartly karpov declined this route but what is the continuation after 32)Rd7. i managed 32...Qh3 33)Kg1-Qg3 34)Kf1 but can't go further. is black just getting rook for knight or does he have mate? please help.
Sep-20-10  Chicago Chess Man: <Pygeum> I haven't worked out all the possible defenses, but I believe white is lost after....32)Rxd7 Qxh3+ 33)Kg1 Qxg3+ 34) Kh1 Re8. (Both 35. Rd8 or 35.Re7 lose to the obvious 35...Qh4+). I think 34)Kf1 also loses to 34...Re8.
Sep-21-10  Pygeum Lycopene: <Chicago> thanks for your help, i think i found what magnus had in mind. 32)Rd7-Qh3 33)Kg1-Qg3 34)Kf1-Re8 35)Qf2-Qh3 36)Kg1-Qd7 37)Rd7-Nh3 and black is up two pawns. almost ten moves ahead, yikes!
Dec-06-10  Chicago Chess Man: <pygeum> in your line, after 35) qf2 black wins with simply 35)...Re1+!

  Sastre: <Chicago Chess Man: <pygeum> in your line, after 35) qf2 black wins with simply 35)...Re1+!> 35...Re1+ loses to 36.Kxe1. Black should play 35...Qh3+ 36.Kg1 Re3 (37.Qxf4 Re1+ 38.Kf2 Rf1+), threatening 37...Rg3+.
