Kibitzer's Corner
May-07-08  inthestepsofTal: Very nice game by Smith, butchering white like a pig
Jun-01-25  mel gibson: I couldn't see any good move.

Stockfish 17 chooses a different ply:

24. .. Nh5

(24. .. Nh5 (1. ... Nh5 2.Qh6 Rxd4 3.Nxd4 Qxc4 4.Rd1 Nxf6 5.Rgd3 a4 6.Qg5 Qd5 7.h4 Qxg5 8.hxg5 Nd5 9.Nc2 Rc8 10.Nxb4 Nxb4 11.Rd8+ Kg7 12.Rxc8 Bxc8 13.Rd4 Nc6 14.Rxa4 Bf5) +3.68/39 112)

score for Black +3.68 depth 39.

if I force SF to play the game ply it's almost a draw:

24. .. Rxd4
25. Nxd4

(25. Nxd4 (1.Nxd4 Qxf6 2.Rg4 g5 3.Rf1 Kh8 4.Qe3 Rd8 5.Ne2 Qe6 6.Qxe6 Nxe6 7.Rxf7 h5 8.Rg3 Ba6 9.Re3 Bxc4 10.Rb7 Nf4 11.Nd4 a4 12.Rxb4 Rxd4 13.Rxa4 Rd1+ 14.Kf2 Rc1 ) -0.30/55 272)

score for White -0.30 depth 55.

Jun-01-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king has thought much and decided for the simple line: 24...Nh5 25. Qh6 Rxd4 26. Nxd4 Qxf6: now B has removed the dangerous P in f6, pinned the N on d4, threatened the R at g3 and has 27... Rd8 or a4 at hands, continuing the counter-attack.
Jun-01-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: In the line 24...Nh5 25. Qh6 Rxd4 26. Nxd4, the king didn't chose Qxc4 because of 27. Rd1 Rd8 28. Rg4 Nxf6 29. Rh4 which seems not so easy for B. Also, B had the advantage that W♔ is at g1, when direct 27. Nf5 would be replied by Qc5+ Qc5+ 28. Kh1 Qxf5 (29. Rg5 Qxf6 ) 29. Qg5 Qxf6 30. Qxf6 Nxf6 31. Rg5 b3 and win.

Imagine for ex. that W has the ♔ at h1, 24...Nh5 25. Qh6 Rxd4 26. Nxd4 Qxc4 27. Nxf6 31. Nf5 would be playable and strong.

Also, the king disagrees with fishouse: 33...Rd2+ 34. Kf3 b2 35. Rb1 a4 36. Ke3 a3 37. Kxd2 a2 38. Kc2 a1=Q 39. Rxb2 Qxe1 and win more quickly.
