Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-30-08  luzhin: 22.Na8!! was a pretty exploitation of Larsen's first move! Otherwise 22...a6 would have answered the deadly threat of 23.Bb5+ and Nc7 mate.
Oct-05-24  mel gibson: The first ply was obvious.

Stockfish 17 says:

17. Ne6+

(17. Ne6+ (1.Ne6+ fxe6 2.dxe6 Ngf6 3.Rd1 Rc6 4.exd7 e6 5.Bb6+ Rxb6 6.Nxb6 Bb4+ 7.Ke2 Rf8 8.Rc1 Nxd7 9.Rc8+ Ke7 10.Rc7 Rd8 11.Rxb7 Rb8 12.Rxb8 Nxb8 13.Na4 Nd7 14.Ke3 Bf7 ) +4.21/45 608)

score for White +4.21 depth 45.

Oct-05-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king thought about this moves: 17. Ne6+ fxe6 18. dxe6 Ndf6 19. Be2. B position in K-side is desperate: B has no move, neither the R on h8 and N has only h6. Therefore, many possibilities for W to win this position, although I didn't present a line properly.
Oct-05-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king wanted to avoid force much the attack for keep e6 pawn as much as could... However, W attack was powerful!
Oct-05-24  areknames: Sheesh, poor Bent got absolutely dismantled here.
Oct-05-24  areknames: <Luzhin> Yes, what's up with 1..a5? What was the matter with Larsen in this tournament?

Oct-05-24  areknames: I've checked out the tournament page and yes, Larsen just played rubbish openings and lost all of his 9 games very quickly. I just can't believe how badly he played in this one. Terrible stuff.
Oct-05-24  Hercdon: Game was absolutely fabulous to play through!

There's plenty of speculation, and some debate in that tournament's page. Larsen gave no explanation to anyone. I wonder if anyone asked. He had lived in Argentina for many years (had an Argentine wife) and had not played in a while. He was a living legend.

Maybe he wanted to get his strong opponents off the books, or wanted to test himself, or was going senile, or overestimated his strength and kept making things worse like gamblers do, or was just trying to have fun in an odd way, who knows...

What we do know is why he declined the draw offer that Garcia Palermo, out of respect, made him in round 7: <It's that I don't make draws in 9 moves> <Es que yo no hago tablas en 9 jugadas> (http://www.nibaldocalvo.com/2021/12...). And that was true his whole life!
