Aug-04-18 | | ChessHigherCat: Just out of curiosity, I checked what I came up with the first time, and I think I've made a little progress since then, because it was a pretty long line: 33. Rxb8+ Qxb8 34. Qxc6 Qc7 35. Qxd5+ Kc8 36. Qa8+ Qb8 37. Rc1+ Kd7 38. Qd5+ Qd6 39. Qf5+ Kd8 40. Qxh7 |

 | | Penguincw: So it looks like when this puzzle was last released, I decided to solve it late, and posted a comment anyway. Didn't expect anyone to see it again. Well, here we go.
---
< tjshann: Got it. If Saturday is Wednesday what will Monday be? Some folks love Monday > This Monday would then have a Friday-level puzzle. If you want a Monday-level puzzle, you'll have to wait 'til next Thursday. ---
I understand why and how these puzzles are being recycled, but I'm curious as to why the specific date of <Wed/Jun/06> was chosen as the starting point. Not quite because of the Tactics Archive (dates back further than that). |
Aug-04-18 | | stst: Again this posted before.
Looks like a R-sac:
33.RxN QxR
34.Qxc6 and Black has no good moves
e.g. f6
35.Qxd5+ etc |
Aug-04-18 | | stst: There're tons of new games, CG doesn't need t recycle old games.
Just pick any game in tourneys within a month.... Biel, Danzhou, Dortmund, you name it....
Unless really no human is managing, and robots know nothing new!? |
Aug-04-18 | | malt: We could take it in turns to post a POTD, relevant to the day, until CG gets back on track.
or we could just mope about recycled games. |
Aug-04-18 | | Junbalansag: Black's 34th move is a blunder, causing him to resign. |
Aug-04-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: click for larger viewWhite mates in 3 |
Aug-04-18 | | AlicesKnight: Rxb8 followed by Qxc6 looks like a winning line. |
Aug-04-18 | | malt: <WorsetPlayerEver:>
Got it 4
1.Re3 Kd5 2.Ke7 Kc4 3.Kd7 Kd5 4.Bb3# |
Aug-04-18 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: White is two pawns down, but the black king is much more exposed and all white pieces are actively placed for a finishing attack. There is only one candidate that is both a check and a capture, so it must be the primary candidate. It has the added bonus of removing a defender and isolating the black king: 33.Rxb8! Qxb8 34.Qxc6 threatening Qxd5+ followed by Rc1+ and Rb1+ winning the queen. Black can try the following defenses: A. 34... Qc8 35.Qxd5+ Qd7 (Kc7? 36.Rc1+) 36.Qa5+ Kc8 37.Rc1+ Kb8 (Kb7 38.Nc5+) 38.Qe5+ Ka8(b7) 39.Qe4+ wins the Rh7 A.1 36... Qc7 37.Rd1+ Kc8 38.Qf5+ K-moves 39.Qxh7 wins B. 34... Qc7 35.Qxd5+ Kc8 (Qd7 transposes to A) 36.Qa8+ Qb8 (Kd7 37.Qxg8) 37.Rc1+ Kd7 38.Qd5+ Qd6 39.Qf5+ forks king and rook. C. 34... Qb3 35.Nc5 wins with the deadly double threat Nxb3 and Qd7# D. 34... Rg6 35.Re8# is the most obliging way to end it. Time for review... |
Aug-04-18 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: I actually did not expect that the "sui-mate" (which I included to emphasize how useless the defending rooks were) would end the game! |
Aug-04-18 | | ChessHigherCat: <malt: <WorsetPlayerEver:> Got it 4
1.Re3 Kd5 2.Ke7 Kc4 3.Kd7 Kd5 4.Bb3#>
Bravo, and good idea about posting our own puzzles, but it's important not to post impossible ones just to pretend that one's own standards are impossibly high. |
Aug-04-18 | | karik: <WorstEver> A good one, not too difficult. Got it in half minute. Rf3! |
Aug-04-18 | | WorstPlayerEver: <malt> Did not find it either. I saw the pattern, but still could not solve it. |
Aug-04-18 | | malt: <ChessHigherCat:> Thanks, we could post a puzzle in relevant to what day of the week it is, (Monday, one star ) I was not referring to post myself, but will do. As too my own standards, I got <WorsetPlayersEver:> puzzle in four moves, not three, so I've got it wrong. |
Aug-04-18 | | ChessHigherCat: <malt> I don't quibble about how many moves it takes, for me you got it.
Just as one more suggestion, I like the <CG> policy of taking moves from real games, but composed puzzles would be fine, too. |
Aug-04-18 | | malt: <ChessHigherCat:> <I like the <CG> policy of taking moves from real games, > I agree, |
Aug-04-18 | | vigneshanand: That isn't difficult. It's a basic exchange sacrifice to open up lines in the center |
Aug-04-18 | | Carlos0012358: Ratively simple for a Saturday puzzle |
Aug-04-18 | | Steve.Patzer: Black’s 25th move was his downfall. How do we get information on what happens to the administration of this site? This has always been the best chess site ever. |
Aug-04-18 | | cormier: Stockfish 8 13... O-O-O? <13...O-O 14.Ne4 Nxe4 15.Qxe4 Nf6 16.Qe2 b5 17.Rc1 Qb7 = -0.03 (28 ply)> |
Aug-04-18 | | ajbaba: @Steve, I learnt that he passed away. |
Aug-04-18 | | mycroft2120: ChessHigherCat... you missed that 34. .. Rg6? allows 35. Re8#. |
Aug-04-18 | | ChessHigherCat: Mycroft2120: You're right, I must have made negative progress since my last solution (although the line still wins eventually) |
Aug-04-18 | | ChessHigherCat: In my line last night I made the same (dumb) mistake as Siban with 34....Rg6, but what's really bizarre is that according to SF, the game drags on forever with the optimal defense, although it's just prolonging the agony: <+56.77 (31 ply) 34...Qc7 35.Qa8+ Qc8 36.Qxd5+ Qd7 37.Qa8+ Qc8 38.Qxa7 Qe6 39.Rxe6 fxe6 40.Qxh7 Re8 41.Nc5 Re7 42.Nb7+ Rxb7 43.Qxb7 Ke8 44.Qh7 g3 45.hxg3 Kf8 46.Qd7 e5 47.Qf5+ Ke7 48.Qxe5+ Kd7 49.Qc5 Kd8 50.Qxh5 Kc7 51.Qc5+ Kd7 52.Qa5 Kd6 53.Qf5 Ke7 54.Qe5+ Kd7 55.Qd5+ Kc8 56.Qc6+ Kd8 57.Qd6+ Kc8 58.Qb6 Kd7,> etc. |
