Jan-20-10 | | Alphastar: nice game indeed! Worth analyzing in detail. |

Jan-20-10 | | zanshin: Wild one indeed. <53...Kf6> should have won for Black. |

Jun-01-10 | | MKalafatas: Louis Barcarola was a young Candidate Master (early 20s) when I played him at the Air Force Championships in 1985. I believe he subsequently achieved a National Master rating. Here he plays a worthy foil to White's creative genius. |

 | | fredthebear: What a festival of sacrifices!
I like to think of the opening queen sacrifice as a result of the Bb5+ unpin as a sort of queenside version of Legall's Mate (attempt, in this case). Typically, Black is often forced to interpose with his own queen, or interpose by playing c6, when dxc6 sets up a discovered check with a promotion threat. This opening unpin that leaps the knight into the center while exposing the sitting queen is fairly common on the kingside and queenside. Speaking of leaping knights, I like snatching the pawn with 24.Nxc5. Black dare not recapture. On second thought, I would not care for the absolute pin after 24...Qa7. The greedy Nc5 would be lost. Alert half-point bail out by White in the end! What a fun game! |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: What madness. 37...g1/Q might not win after 38.Rxg1,Qxg1; 39.d6. Would 17...c6; 18.dxc6,d5; 19.cxb7,Rb8; 20.Nc3,d5!? have improved for Black? |

First <39...Kg7>. The purpose of this move is twofold: So that cxb5 wouldn't be with check and so that promotion wouldn't be with check. Then after <40.d7> there comes <40...Qg5!>. The point being that <41.d8=Q> would be met with <41...f5+ 42.Kd7 Qxd8+ 43.Kxd8 fxe4>. With White's K sidelined, the B alone can't stop both Black's e-pawn and the passed c-pawn Black's about to create. Of course, White doesn't need to promote straight away but I'm not seeing any alternative that would save him. A great game to play through but I really can't believe Black got suckered into the stalemate. As <ftb> says, alarm bells should have been ringing. |

 | | Honza Cervenka: White's play from the opening was very inventive but objectively incorrect, and black could win, if he would not have fallen into quite cheap stalemate trap in the end. |

 | | eternaloptimist: I’m glad that u guys enjoyed playing over this game! It’s definitely not a game that’s really high on accuracy, but it’s a very unique, interesting & crazy game for sure! <tga> I didn’t choose my pun b/c it’s based off of a Fischer quote. I chose it b/c it fits the game. Monokroussos did an excellent job of not giving up, aiming for a stalemate, achieving that & consequently getting a draw instead of a loss! <goodevans> I agree that it’s difficult to believe that Barcarola botched the win by allowing a stalemate. |
