plang: Game 2 of their third round match after the first was drawn. Ivanchuk went on to win the President's Cup after defeating Bareev and Khalifman. Larsen had played 9 a3 against Spassky in the 1968 Lugano Olympiad; 9 a4 was new. Ivanchuk was critical of 16..g5? recommending 16..f5 or 16..cxd as better defenses. the key move was 24 Rd7! which Ivanchuk explained by "Temporarily leaving the piece White uses combinational threats to achieve maximum activity for his rook, in order to pick up the piece later under favorable conditions.". If 23..Nd3 the 24 Qd4. A second pawn was lost after 32..Qf6? but by that point the game was already decided.
