Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-12-10  raymondhow: Hello, this was my game from long ago. It was published in Chess Voice magazine under the title "Master Scalping". No great brilliancy, but I managed to made lemonade from my opening error lemons :)
Mar-22-13  raymondhow: Instead of 7 O-O, a much better line for me would've been 7 Be3, O-O-O; 8 Nd2, Be2; 9 Qe2 and if now 9 ... Nd4?; 10 Bd4, Rd4; 11 Nb3. Anyone else care to kibitz this, my most "famous" (yet rather dubious) game? It's been over 30 years, and I've still never pinpointed exactly where things went decisively right for me...
Dec-29-14  outplayer: Raymond in the line you suggested after 7.Be3 O-O-O 8.Nd2 Be2 9.Qe2 Nd4 is not that bad because after 10.Bd4 Rd4 11.Nb3 Qc3 12.bc3 Re4 the position is only slightly better for White. Komodo 8 says 7.h3 is the best move.
Dec-29-14  outplayer: 11...Qe5 wins for Black
Feb-08-15  raymondhow: Thanks for the remarks, Out. Yes, 11... Qe5 looks much better for black, simply wins a piece. 11... Qb6 allowed me to give up pawns for great counterplay.
Feb-04-19  raymondhow: From the Stockfish analysis, seems that Black's real blunder was 19 ... Nd5 where he should've played 19 ... Re8, a turnabout of over 6 points. I count ten question marks, five by each side. So fitting for my most famous game ;) Sorry for beating a dead horse...
Oct-13-21  raymondhow: Reminiscing a bit more on this game this morning. This was the second game of a four round Swiss, in which we both had lost the first round. After the game, Vickers was so disgusted with his play (and/or with losing to a 1790 player) that he decided to withdraw from the tournament. When someone suggested that he keep going, he just shrugged and said, "There'll be other tournaments". Later I thought it was a wise move on his part, to lick his wounds and fight another day.
