An Englishman: Good Evening: Our Player of the Day for 4 September 2016 comes up with a sparkling but perhaps flawed combination; however, his opponent didn't fall into the main line.

After 39...Bxe4, Thorold settled for the loss of a second pawn with 40.Re1. If 40.Bxe4+,Qxe4+; 41.dxe4,Rxd2+; 42.Kf3,R8d3+ wins, but White wins if 42.Kf1,Rd1+; 43.Ne1.

So Wayte might have intended 39...Bxe4; 40.Bxe4+,Qxe4+; 41.dxe4,Rxd2+; 42.Kf1,Rxc2; 43.Qf3,Rdd2 threatening 44...Nd4. But 43.Ke1,Rd2; 44.Qxa7 seems to force perpetual check.

So was Wayte's combination unsound? Or perhaps more likely, is it just my analysis?
