Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-25-13  sneaky pete: Hexathlon means event with 6 participants. This game was played March 20 in Rotterdam. In his notes in the newspaper <De Maasbode> Koetsheid calls 8... Qd4 "a curious move", maybe his way of saying "a weak move".

Spielmann stayed in the Netherlands from the middle of March till the end of April 1933. He gave 13 exhibitions and played short matches with Landau and Davidson and two hexathlons organized in his honour.

In Rotterdam (March 18, 19, 20, 21 and 23) he played against Landau and 4 amateurs (19 year old Muhring, Schenk, Koetsheid and G. Boersma). Spielmann won all his 5 games.

In Amsterdam (March 26, 27, 29, 30 and April 1) he met Euwe and 4 other local players. Euwe won the event (4,5 points). Spielmann drew with Euwe, Kleefstra and Felderhof and beat Emile Mulder and Schelfhout.

Jun-25-13  JimNorCal: <sneaky pete>: thanks for the history. another "curious" move is 14. ... Bc7.
Did he completely miss Ba3 as a reply?
Jun-25-13  sneaky pete: <JimNorCal> I don't think he did. After 14.b3 .. Koetsheid writes "The prospects for black don't look rosy anymore" (as if they ever did). Not a word about the next couple of moves, until 19.f4 .. when black is completely lost.

I would call 13... Bd8 a funny, or at least curious move.

Jun-25-13  JimNorCal: And 23. ... Re8 is another example of missing a threat. Well, to be fair, the guy went blind at age 7. He's got a pretty good excuse!
