Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-12-13  optimal play: <<<<<<THE CENTENNIAL CHESS CONGRESS.>

THE MAJOR TOURNEY.>

In the Major Tourney of the Centennial Chess Congress play was continued during yesterday at the City Bank Hall... At board 2 Mr Charlick played his favourite Petroff defence against Mr Lampe, who blocked his own position by playing 3 P to Q 3. There was a good deal of ingenuity in Mr Lampe's after-play, but Mr Charlick had no great difficulty in establishing a strong counter attack, and in placing the game to his credit.>

Time - Mr Lampe 1 hour 43 minutes; Mr Charlick 1 hour 20 minutes.>

[T]he scores of the competitors at the close of the day's play :-

Mr Charlick, 2 ; Mr Crane, 2 ; Mr Brocklebank, 1 ; Mr Lampe, 1 ; Mr Stanley, 1 ; Mr Tullidge, 1 ; Mr Hay, 0 ; and Mr Higgs, 0.>
