Sep-08-11  Whitehat1963: Slaughter! How might black have improved?
Aug-23-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king sees with a possible line: 26. Nxe5 Bxe5 27. Bxg6 fxg6 28. Rh8+ Kxh8 29. Qh4+ Kg8 30. Bxe5 Qxe5 31. Qxd8+ Kg7 32. Qe7+ Kh6 33. Rd1. It is this enough?
Aug-23-24  mel gibson: I guessed that move as the back rack needed to be cleared for the protection offered by the Rook and the Black King's position ripped open.

Stockfish 16.1 says:

26. Bxg6

(26. Bxg6 (1.Bxg6 fxg6 2.Qxg6 Qf7 3.Qh7+ Kf8 4.Nxe5 Bxe5 5.Qh4 Bf6 6.Bg5 Rd3 7.Rxd3 Nxd3 8.Bxf6 Bc2 9.Bd4 Ke8 10.Qh8+ Kd7 11.Qb8 Kc6 12.Qc8+ Kd6 13.Bxa7 e5 14.a4 Qd7 ) +5.95/47 486)

score for White +5.95 depth 47.

Aug-23-24  stacase: Yay!! Move for move two days in a row. (-:

My dear departed brother always said, "Look for who is not doing their job? In this case it's that Bishop sitting there on b1 holding up progress. What better way than to sacrifice his eminence via 26.Bxg6. The rest more or less plays itself, but you have to be careful. The final 29Qh7+ is sweet.

Aug-23-24  vajeer: This puzzle is more difficult than it looks. Black can respond in different ways after 26. Bxg6 and while computer shows 26...fxg6 to be the best reply, on the board one needs to evaluate other replies. For example black could try 26...Be8 or Bd1.
