Kibitzer's Corner
May-04-13  Shams: Two days before Troff turns 15, Kamsky gift-wraps him a brutal lesson on the Dutch Defense.

I wonder how long Gata spent on moves 15-16? After <20...Kg7> the smoke has cleared; White is left with awful minor pieces and far too many weaknesses on the dark squares. And just as in yesterday's game, Kamsky wins by throwing the pawns around his king forward.

May-04-13  zoren: Ironic turn of events - the reputation of the Dutch defense hinges on blacks counter play he gains from f7 - f5 versus the weakening of the a2-g8 diagonal.

But it is whites diagonals that are exposed after a small gain of material from the combination started on 15. c5.

R Fontaine vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2007 should be a reminder that in the Dutch, you might want to hesitate to grab material if it compromises your position, giving black a long lasting initiative.

May-04-13  RookFile: It is really a VERY instructive game.
May-05-13  Strongest Force: The kid was doing fine up until 21.Bf3. That was a 'dear in the headlights move' which experience will eliminate.
May-05-13  Edmontonchessclub: A deep exchange sacrifice by Kamsky.

HeMateMe: Interesting set up. Kamsky doesnt complete his development till move 23, but then he has a better position, driving white off of the h1/a8 diagonal.

Maurice Ashley is looking at the games with a computer during the broadcast, so he "saw" the rather stunning possibility of <16.Nd5!!> with big advantage to White (the main tactical idea being that after 16...cxd5 17.Bxd5+ Kh8 the king doesn't defend f8 anymore, so 18.Bxc5 Qxg5 19.Bxf8). Troff was thinking quite a lot on his 16th move, so they started speculating that he may be considering it, but not surprisingly he didn't play it. Btw, 15...d5 (instead of dxc5) may run into 16.Bxd5+! though after 16...Kh8 it's actually not so bad for Black.

May-05-13  Marmot PFL: Always have to look for tactics like that in the Leningrad Dutch, one reason I gave it up.
May-06-13  Clodhopper: Wish I could play a Dutch Defense against a 2400+ rated player. Without getting eviscerated....
May-07-13  Boris Schipkov: It is interesting that Gelfand lost 3 games in 2012 against the Dutch, to Nakamura, Williams and Kamsky.
