Ron: After 13 . .... 0-0 my Stockfish gives an eval of 0.00. But with White's 14. e5, the evals go negative for White. Stockfish is not keen on Ivanchuk's 14. .. Nh5: the evals jump back to White's favor. At White's 24th move Stockfish plays f4 with an eval of 10 for White (!). White's actual move 24. Bc5 though gives White +1.51.

25. Qc6 is a blunder. The evals go from over 1.51 for White to -3.86. Much better moves for White are 25. BxN or 25. Rdg1.

Basically, at the end of move 24, Ivanchuk was in a severely disadvantageous position. But White blundered on move 25.

Dec-27-16  Gilmoy: Castling short with <13.f3 O-O> must be a standard position with vast theory.

White always has the cheesy Bxh6 kiddie sac threat, and Black allows it because there's nothing to fear. In a rapid, it's maybe nice to test the other guy's dancing skills once every few lifetimes, and see if you can surprise him into an inaccuracy. Alas, Ivanchuk is in his element when calmly defending a better position. <19..Ra7> is sufficient defense, and Black's counterattack is correctly ferocious: <18..Bxc3> (this is like Rxc3 but cheaper, a real bargain) <20..Qa5 22..Rd8>, already planning to return material with <23..d4 24.Bc4+ Rd5!> and White never does solve that c3 problem.

In the final position, White's Q is skewered to 38.Q<any> Rg6 dogpiling on the pin (and incidentally defending Ng7, so that 38.Q(d7,e7) are pointless). Hence 38.Qb4 <for 39.Qd2> Rg6:

and still a piece up.

Ron: Jeez, no comment on my claim that Qc6 was a blunder by White.

FSR: Ivanchuk tried this line again a few days later at the World Blitz Championship. It didn't go well: Karjakin vs Ivanchuk, 2016

Ron: Thanks for the update, <FSR>! Karjakin was probably aware of this game and entirely willing to get into a "theoretical discussion" with Ivanchuk on this opening line. Its things like that which shows why Karjakin played for the Word Chess Championship.
