Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-01-17  thegoodanarchist: I feel like the luckiest chess fan in history.

There have been 7 chess gods, and I've seen 4 of them.

And Magnus might be the chess god of chess gods.

7. Alekhine
6. Karpov
5. Lasker
4. Capablanca
3. Kasparov
2. Fischer
1. Carlsen

Jul-01-17  thegoodanarchist: OK, maybe Morphy is chess god #8?
Jul-01-17  yiotta: What, Petrosian was chopped liver? (But you knew you were opening a can of worms with a best/of list...)
Jul-01-17  thegoodanarchist: < yiotta: What, Petrosian was chopped liver? (But you knew you were opening a can of worms with a best/of list...)>

Where would you put Petrosian on that list? Ahead of who?

Certainly not Fischer! Certainly not Kasparov nor Capa!

Lasker? No way.

Karpov? Don't insult me.

Alekhine or Morphy? Ok, I will entertain that discussion.

Petrosian was no chopped liver!

(I wouldn't even say that about chopped liver :)

Jul-02-17  Chessinfinite: <Magnus might be the chess god of chess gods.>

Nah, there have been players much more deserving than Magnus being chess god of gods. Karpov for example never came near last in a top classical event in his twenties :)

Jul-02-17  WorstPlayerEver: Because Carlsen was not born when Karpov was in his twenties. Maybe that's why ☺
Jul-02-17  yiotta: <thegoodanarchist:Where would you put Petrosian on that list? Ahead of who?> I would prefer Karpov ahead of Lasker not only alphabetically but for consistent quality of games, but have to agree that Petrosian might belong as a formidable number eight. Good list.
Jul-02-17  john barleycorn: It is :

1. Fischer
2. Karpov

3rd - 10th I don't mind much as long as Anand, Capablanca, Carlsen, Lasker, Morphy, Rubinstein and Spassky are among them :-)

We agree on the alphabet! That's good.

And I admit to prejudice against Karpov because he got so much help from the Communists. I don't like Communists.

That is true as Karpov was the first result of the Soviets pumping more money into chess after Spassky lost to Fischer.

But the selfstyled "child of change" (Kasparov) benefitted even more.

Karpov over Kasparov as chess player and moderate Bolchevik any time.

Jul-03-17  luzhin: 54.Rd7 is a database draw! But 54.d6?? is what happens in blitz. Actually 27.f5! would have given Vishy a big plus--why not keep the f-pawn?
